It is ChatGPT, with a P. Yet ChatGBT gets more than 1 million US searches a month, according to Ahrefs, and so does “chat gbt” with a space. Five more ChatGPT misspellings clear 100,000 each. Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, Perplexity and Midjourney all have their own typo traffic. Some of those typos lead to a restaurant, a star sign or a video game hero instead of an AI.

This guide ranks the most misspelled AI names by US search volume and explains the six patterns that produce almost all of them. It gives the correct spelling and official address for every major chatbot. And it covers why the typos matter: websites chase them for traffic, and scammers register lookalike domains to catch the people who make them.

The Key Takeaways

  • ChatGBT leads the list: “chatgbt” and “chat gbt” each get more than 1 million US searches a month. Chatgtp, chat gtp, chatgp, chatgpy and chatgt each pass 100,000.
  • Gemini and Copilot come next: “gemeni” and “co pilot” each pass 100,000 US searches a month, though some of that traffic wants the star sign or the ordinary English word.
  • Six patterns explain nearly every typo: sound-alike letters, swapped letters, the key next door, dropped letters, extra spaces, and spelling by ear or in another language.
  • There is no “GBT”: GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, from a 2018 OpenAI paper.
  • Typos are a security risk: researchers have documented fake DeepSeek and Grok sites spreading malware, and a typosquatted “deepseeek” package that 222 developers downloaded.

ChatGPT owns the top of the list: of the 17 misspellings below that clear 10,000 US searches a month, 11 are attempts at ChatGPT. The table below is the Fello AI Misspelling Index, our ranking of AI-name misspellings by monthly US search volume, built from Ahrefs keyword data pulled in October 2026. Ahrefs reports volume in brackets rather than exact counts, so the order inside each bracket carries no meaning.

Two rows need a caveat. “Co pilot” is also how people write the ordinary English word, so not every one of those searches is aimed at Microsoft. “Claud” on its own gets 10,000+ searches too, but much of that traffic wants a New York restaurant or a French painter rather than Anthropic’s chatbot.

For scale, the correct spelling “chatgpt” sits in the 10,000,000+ bracket. The misspelling “chatgbt” sits just one bracket below the real name.

Why People Misspell AI Names: Six Patterns

Almost every AI misspelling in the Fello AI Misspelling Index comes from one of six patterns. The AI brands invited most of them. They chose names that are acronyms, foreign words or invented spellings, so a typo is rarely a sign of carelessness.

1. Sound-Alike Letters

B and P are made the same way, with the lips pressed together. The only difference is whether the voice switches on. Say “G-B-T” and “G-P-T” quickly and they blur, which is why “chatgbt” and “chat gbt” are the two biggest AI typos. “Chatgdp” follows the same logic with T and D, and the result happens to spell GDP, a three-letter abbreviation people already know. “Cloude ai” is the sound-alike at word level: Claude becomes cloud.

2. Swapped Letters

Fast typing reverses letter pairs. “Chatgtp” and “chat gtp” swap the last two letters of GPT, and both clear 100,000 US searches a month. “Cluade” swaps the A and U in Claude and passes 10,000, with “cluade code” adding more than 1,000 on its own.

3. The Key Next Door

On a standard QWERTY keyboard, R and Y sit on either side of T. That explains “chatgpr” (10,000+) and “chatgpy” (100,000+): the finger aimed at T landed one key off. The square bracket sits right next to P, which produces “chatgp[t”, a typo that still gets more than 1,000 US searches a month.

4. Dropped Letters

Short names lose letters fast. “Chatgp” and “chatgt” both pass 100,000. “Gemni” drops the first I of Gemini, “deepsek” drops an E, “coplot” drops an I, and “antropic” drops the silent H in Anthropic.

5. Extra Spaces

AI brands like to glue two words together, and people unglue them. “Chat gbt” and “chat gtp” add a space to a typo. “Deep seek”, “co pilot” and “mid journey” split names that their makers write as one word: DeepSeek, Copilot and Midjourney.

6. Spelling by Ear and in Other Languages

Many people hear an AI name before they see it written. “Gemeni”, “gemenai” and “jemini ai” are Gemini written the way it sounds. “Claud” drops the silent E. “Grock”, “groc” and “grog” are three guesses at Grok. “Perplexcity” adds a city to Perplexity.

Other languages add their own versions. “Openia” and “open ia” look like typos, but IA is how Spanish and French abbreviate artificial intelligence (inteligencia artificial, intelligence artificielle). The search data confirms who is typing them, with queries like “que es open ia” and “ceo de open ia”. “Dipsik” is DeepSeek spelled phonetically, and it turns up next to “yapay zeka”, the Turkish for AI.

ChatGPT Misspellings: ChatGBT, ChatGTP and Chat GPT

The correct spelling is ChatGPT: one word, capital C, and the letters G-P-T in capitals. ChatGBT, ChatGTP, ChatGP and Chat GPT all mean the same OpenAI chatbot, and the official address is chatgpt.com. The older address, chat.openai.com, now redirects there.

What GPT Stands For

There is no GBT in ChatGPT. GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, and the name traces back to a June 2018 OpenAI paper titled “Improving Language Understanding by Generative Pre-Training”. Each word describes the model.

Generative means it writes new text rather than looking up stored answers. Pre-trained means it learned from a huge body of text before anyone typed a question into it. Transformer is the type of neural network it is built on.

The “Chat” at the front is the conversation window. Once the acronym makes sense, the letters stop wandering: a model that is “pre-trained” gets a P, never a B. For the bigger picture of what the product does, our beginner’s guide to ChatGPT starts from zero.

Why ChatGPT Typos Matter More Than Most

OpenAI treats “GPT” as its own brand. Its brand guidelines state that the company does not permit “our GPT brand to be used in app, product, developer or company names”. That gives readers a simple test: an app called “ChatGBT”, or any app with GPT in its name, was not made by OpenAI. The only official ChatGPT apps come from OpenAI itself.

Gemini, Claude and the Other Big AI Names

Every major chatbot outside ChatGPT has its own set of typos. This table gives the correct spelling, the maker and the official address for each one, with ChatGPT included for reference.

Gemini

Google’s chatbot is spelled Gemini, and “gemeni” gets 100,000+ US searches a month, the same bracket as “co pilot” and the highest for any name outside ChatGPT. The name is Latin. Jeff Dean, then Gemini’s co-technical lead, explained in December 2023 that it refers to two teams, Google Brain and DeepMind, joining forces:

If the twins help you remember the spelling, the second vowel is an I, as in “twIns”. Gemini has a free tier, covered in our guide on whether Gemini is free.

Claude and Anthropic

Anthropic’s chatbot is Claude, with a silent E, and the company is Anthropic, with an H after the T. “Claud ai” and “cluade” each pass 10,000 US searches a month, and “cloude ai” and “antropic” each pass 1,000.

The typos follow Anthropic’s products too. “Cluade code”, “claud code” and “claud cowork” each clear 1,000.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft writes Copilot as one word with no hyphen. “Co pilot” passes 100,000 US searches a month and “microsoft co pilot” passes 10,000, which shows how many people are looking for the Microsoft product under the ordinary English spelling. Our explainer on what Microsoft Copilot is sorts out the consumer app from the Microsoft 365 version.

DeepSeek

The Chinese chatbot is DeepSeek, one word with a capital S. “Deep seek” passes 10,000 US searches a month, while “deepseak” and “deepsek” each pass 1,000. The chat itself costs nothing and DeepSeek sells no consumer subscription, as our guide on whether DeepSeek is free explains. Any site charging for DeepSeek chat access is not DeepSeek.

Grok, Perplexity and Midjourney

Grok comes from Robert A. Heinlein’s 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where it means, in the Oxford English Dictionary’s summary, “to understand intuitively or by empathy”. When xAI announced the chatbot on 3 November 2023, the company described it as “an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, a different book. The maker now brands itself SpaceXAI. “Grock” and “grock ai” each pass 1,000 US searches a month.

Perplexity shares its name with a measure of uncertainty in information theory, and “perplexcity” adds a city to it. Its typos are the smallest in the index, at 100+ each. Midjourney is one word, and “mid journey” still passes 1,000.

Typos That Take You Somewhere Else

Some AI misspellings collide with a completely different product, person or thing, and the search results follow the collision instead of the chatbot. Five collisions show up clearly in the data.

ChatGPT Zero Is GPTZero

“Chatgbt zero”, “chat gbt checker” and “chat gbt detector” each pass 1,000 US searches a month. These people want GPTZero, the AI text detector, a separate product built by Princeton student Edward Tian and launched in January 2023. GPTZero is not an OpenAI product.

Gemeni Is Also a Star Sign and a Crypto Exchange

“Gemeni sign”, “gemeni dates” and “gemeni horoscope” are astrology. “Gemeni card” and “gemeni ipo” are about Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by the Winklevoss twins, which listed on Nasdaq in September 2025.

Claud Is a Restaurant and a Painter

“Claud nyc” passes 1,000 US searches a month, and Claud is a restaurant on East 10th Street in New York. “Claud monet” and “cluade monet” are the French painter Claude Monet.

Grock Is a Video Game Hero

In Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Grock is a tank hero called the Fortress Titan, and the searches about his season skins and release dates have nothing to do with AI.

Groq Is a Different AI Company

“Groc ai chip” and “grog ai chip” are people mixing up Grok with Groq, an AI chip company founded by Jonathan Ross in 2016. When xAI launched Grok in November 2023, Ross answered with a blog post titled “Welcome to Groq’s Galaxy, Elon” and suggested a new name for Musk’s bot: “Slartibartfast the Chatbot”. Techdirt, which covered the exchange, noted that Groq holds multiple live trademarks for its name.

Who Profits From AI Typos

Two groups make money from misspelled AI names: websites that rank for the typos, and scammers who register lookalike domains.

Websites That Rank for the Typo

Ranking for a popular misspelling is an old search marketing tactic, and AI names are the newest target. On 5 October 2026, Robert Youssef, who builds the prompt site God of Prompt, posted a screenshot from his Google Search Console showing what one typo-targeted page still earns:

His screenshot shows the query “chatgbt” with 12,782,874 impressions and 6,821 clicks, a click-through rate of about 0.05%. The longer “chatgbt ai” earned 77,254 impressions and 3,965 clicks, about 5.1%.

The gap is the lesson. The tiny rate on the bare typo suggests nearly everyone who types “chatgbt” wants ChatGPT itself and goes straight to it. The longer phrases come from people curious enough to read about it.

Scammers Who Register Lookalikes

The darker version is typosquatting: registering an address close to a real one and waiting for mistakes. Security researchers documented three AI-themed campaigns of this kind in early 2025.

Kaspersky reported in March 2025 that sites such as deepseek-pc-ai[.]com offered a DeepSeek Windows client that did not exist at the time. The installer gave attackers remote access instead. Soon after Grok 3 was announced, attackers offered a Grok client from v3-grok[.]com as well, and a post on X promoting one of the fake sites reached 1.2 million views. Kaspersky’s full technical report lists the domains, and two of them are straight misspellings: app.deapseek[.]com and deep-seek[.]bar.

Zscaler found a DeepSeek lookalike, deepseekcaptcha[.]top, registered on 31 January 2025. It showed a fake CAPTCHA that tricked visitors into running a command, and the command installed the Vidar information stealer.

The third case is a typo in its purest form. Two malicious Python packages, one named “deepseeek” with a third E, sat on PyPI, the main repository for Python developers. BleepingComputer reported that 222 developers downloaded them before Positive Technologies got them removed.

How to Make Sure You Reach the Real Chatbot

The safest way past every typo is to type the official address once, bookmark it, and never type it again. Four habits cover it:

  1. Bookmark the official address: chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, chat.deepseek.com, grok.com or perplexity.ai. Open the chatbot from the bookmark.
  2. Check the developer name in the app store. The listing should name the real maker: OpenAI for ChatGPT, Google for Gemini, Anthropic for Claude.
  3. Distrust “GPT” in an app name. OpenAI does not allow it, so the app is a third party at best.
  4. Never install a desktop client from a link in a post. Get it from the vendor’s own site or the official app store.

One App for Every Real Model

If you use more than one chatbot, every extra bookmark is another address to mistype. Fello AI puts GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Perplexity in one app for Mac, iPhone and iPad. You install it once from the App Store, so there is no lookalike site to land on and no spelling to get right. Fello AI has a free tier, and the paid plan costs $9.99 a month.

The Verdict: The Typo Is Not the Problem

Typing “chatgbt” is normal. It gets more than a million US searches a month, and the typo on its own does no harm. The risk starts when the typo lands on a page that is not the real chatbot: a ranking site at best, a malware download at worst. Learn the six patterns, check the official address once, bookmark it, and the spelling never matters again.
