Every comparison of Meta AI vs ChatGPT on the first page of Google tells you that Meta AI runs Llama 4. It does not. Meta's own assistant page says Meta AI is powered by Muse Spark from Meta Superintelligence Labs, the model line that took over the Meta AI app and meta.ai in April 2026. That error is a useful test. A page with the engine wrong is unlikely to have the rest right. Most of page one also still says Meta AI has no desktop app, which stopped being true on 19 August 2026.

So this comparison is built the other way round, from what each company publishes about its own product, checked on 15 September 2026. The short version is that ChatGPT vs Meta AI is not a fight about raw intelligence. It is a choice about where your assistant lives and what happens to what you tell it. Meta AI is free and already sitting inside apps you open every day. ChatGPT costs money once you pass a limit, and it keeps your conversations out of an advertising targeting system. Both of those sentences need qualifying, and the qualifications are the whole article.

The Key Takeaways

  • The model: Meta AI runs Muse Spark, not Llama 4. Meta does not publish which point release the assistant calls, so any page naming a version is guessing.
  • The price: Meta AI is free up to a daily limit, after which Meta sells a paid Meta One plan. ChatGPT is $0 free, $8 Go, $20 Plus and from $100 Pro.
  • Both have ads now. Meta uses your AI conversations to target ads across its apps. ChatGPT's Go plan "may include ads" in the product itself. The mechanisms are not the same thing.
  • The exception worth knowing: Meta says WhatsApp interactions are not used for that personalisation unless you add WhatsApp to your Accounts Center.
  • Both run natively on a Mac. Meta shipped a Mac app on 19 August 2026, which most comparisons still say does not exist.

What Model Each One Actually Runs

Meta AI runs Muse Spark, and Meta will not tell you which one

Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced the Muse family in April 2026, and Muse Spark took over the Meta AI app and meta.ai that month, with Meta promising the remaining surfaces in the weeks after. The handover was staggered rather than instant, and Meta's glasses kept running a custom Llama 4 build for months. Meta's own assistant page states it plainly and without a version number. That omission matters more than it looks. The Muse Spark line has moved three times since launch, through 1.1 in July, then 1.2, then 1.3 on 2 September, and each release changed what the model can do.

When Meta shipped Muse Spark 1.3, it named only its coding agent and its paid model API as destinations. No consumer surface was listed. Bloomberg reported on launch day that a rollout to Facebook, Instagram and the Meta AI app was planned in the coming days, which is reporting rather than a Meta commitment. The honest position, then, is that the assistant runs some version of Muse Spark and nobody outside Meta can say which. If you want the benchmark picture rather than the product picture, our model level comparison of Muse Spark against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini does that job, and what Muse Spark 1.3 actually scores has the current numbers.

One naming trap is worth clearing up before it costs you an hour. In September 2026 Meta launched something called Muse, a personal agent with its own iPhone app. That is a different product from the Meta AI assistant discussed here, even though both carry the Muse name and both come from the same lab.

ChatGPT names its models, plan by plan

OpenAI takes the opposite approach and prints the model on its own price list. The free plan gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna. Plus at $20 adds advanced reasoning with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6. Pro reasoning, also powered by GPT-6 Astra, starts at $100. Those names were on the page on 15 September 2026.

That transparency is the real gap between the two products, and it is bigger than any benchmark score. With ChatGPT you know what you are talking to and you can tell when it changes. With Meta AI you cannot, so you cannot attribute a bad answer to anything, and you cannot tell whether last week's better answer came from a better prompt or a silent model swap.

Where You Can Actually Use Each One

Meta AI is already installed, which is the entire pitch

Meta lists its assistant on the web at meta.ai, in mobile apps for iOS and Android, as a desktop app on Mac, and inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook. Nothing to install and no account to make, because you already made it. For a large number of people this is the only argument that matters, and it is a good one. The assistant that is one tap away in a conversation you are already having beats the better assistant behind a second app and a login.

The Mac app arrived on 19 August 2026, and it is still labelled beta. Meta publishes no system requirements for it at all, so every specification in circulation traces back to one hands-on inspection by 9to5Mac on launch day, which found a native Apple silicon build for macOS 15 or later at about 16MB. Treat those as launch-day figures rather than a spec sheet, because the download has been replaced several times since.

The behaviour is better attested, because Meta documents it itself. Option and Space drops a compact box over whatever you are looking at. Point the app at any window and it gets live context of what is on screen, and holding the Fn key dictates into any app, which is the feature most likely to keep it on your Mac. We went through what it can see, what the shortcut collides with and what the permissions actually grant in our full review of the Meta AI Mac app.

ChatGPT is a place you go on purpose

ChatGPT has native apps on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android plus the web. It is a destination rather than an ambient presence. You open it to do a thing. Next to an assistant living inside your messages that sounds like a weakness, and for quick questions it is. For work of any length it inverts, because a destination keeps history, projects and files in one searchable place instead of scattering them across four social apps.

If the Mac desktop is where you actually work, the fuller picture of how the native clients compare is in our head to head of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as Mac apps.

Meta AI vs ChatGPT on Price

The free tiers are closer than the price tags suggest

Meta AI is free, and Meta markets it that way. The caveat the free-versus-paid headlines skip is that free use now carries a daily limit, and Meta's own help centre is blunt about what happens when you reach it. You upgrade to a paid Meta One plan, or you wait for the limit to reset. That is a shipped subscription with named tiers, not an experiment.

Free is the shape of the entry, not the whole product. The meter is already installed.

ChatGPT's free plan is more generous than its reputation. It gives unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, with limits landing on uploads, image generation and voice rather than on typing. Anyone whose use is mostly conversation will struggle to hit a wall. Our breakdown of what the ChatGPT free plan actually includes goes through the caps one by one.

The paid ladder only matters on one side

ChatGPT's ladder runs $8 for Go, $20 for Plus and from $100 for Pro, printed on the page with the models each tier unlocks. Meta sells Meta One but does not put a consumer price list next to its assistant, so the two are not comparable line by line.

That asymmetry makes the money comparison simpler than it looks. The question is not which subscription is better value. It is whether you need a subscription at all on top of the free assistant you already have.

The answer depends on what breaks first. If message volume is your limit, Go at $8 fixes it cheaply. If reasoning quality on hard problems is your limit, only Plus changes anything, because Plus is where GPT-6 Astra appears. We work through that decision in which ChatGPT plan you actually need, and the cross-vendor view is in our comparison of what every AI subscription costs.

The Cost That Is Not Money

Your chats became an advertising signal in December

This is the section no ranking page writes, and it is the one that should decide the question for a lot of people. In October 2025 Meta announced that it would, in its own words, "use your interactions with AI at Meta to personalize the content and ads you see, including things like posts and reels". The change took effect on 16 December 2025, with in-product notices from 7 October.

Meta does carve out sensitive ground. Its post says that when people discuss "religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership", it does not use those topics to show them ads. Read the phrasing carefully, because it says "topics such as", which is an illustrative list rather than a closed one. On geography Meta says only that it is "rolling out these changes in most regions" and names no exceptions. Reuters reported at the time that the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea were left out, and that users would not be given an opt-out. The controls Meta points to, Ads Preferences and feed controls, change which ads you see rather than whether your conversations feed the system.

The WhatsApp exception almost nobody mentions

Buried in the same announcement is the most practically useful sentence in this whole comparison. Meta says WhatsApp interactions are not used for this personalisation unless you have added your WhatsApp account to your Accounts Center. WhatsApp is the surface where most people meet Meta AI in the first place, so for a large share of users the ad-targeting concern is conditional on a setting they may never have touched. Check that setting before you decide anything, because it changes the terms of the trade rather than the trade itself.

Meta also offers Incognito Chat, announced on 13 May 2026 for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. Its claim is that messages are processed in an environment even Meta cannot access and are not saved, built on WhatsApp's Private Processing. Note what it does not claim. There is no training-exclusion promise attached, and it is a mode you have to choose per conversation rather than the default state of the product. If you would rather remove the assistant than manage it, we have a step by step on turning Meta AI off across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

ChatGPT is not the clean alternative it was a year ago

The tidy version of this comparison used to be that Meta monetises you and OpenAI charges you. That distinction has narrowed. OpenAI's own pricing page now attaches the line "This plan may include ads" to the $8 Go tier. ChatGPT advertising went live across 31 European markets on 24 August 2026, reaching Free and Go users with personalisation switched off at launch. OpenAI says Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free.

The difference that survives is mechanical, and it still favours OpenAI. ChatGPT shows you ads inside ChatGPT. Meta takes what you said to the assistant and uses it to target you everywhere else it owns, which is a different and much larger surface.

Paying $20 for Plus removes ads from ChatGPT entirely. Meta sells no equivalent exit. Our guide to using ChatGPT without ads covers the routes in detail.

What Each One Is Better At

Meta AI wins on reach, images and zero friction

For a question that arrives mid-conversation, Meta AI is unbeatable, because it is already in the conversation. Image generation is its other genuine strength, fast and free and without the queue psychology of a paid tier, which we cover in our look at the Meta AI image generator. Group chats are a third, and the gap is wider than it looks, because OpenAI shipped the same idea and then pulled it. ChatGPT group chats began winding down on 9 July 2026, and you can no longer create one, turn an existing conversation into one, or join one from an invite link. Meta AI never needed a separate feature for any of this, because it already sits in the group thread you were using anyway.

ChatGPT wins on anything you will still care about tomorrow

Long documents, files, code, structured research, work you return to across days: this is where a named frontier model and a real workspace beat convenience, and it is not close. ChatGPT also tells you what it is running, which turns a bad answer into something you can diagnose. The practical dividing line is duration. Questions answered and forgotten inside a minute go to whichever assistant is nearest. Anything you will open again tomorrow belongs in the one with history, projects and a model you can name. Our guide on picking the right AI for each task extends that logic across the other assistants.

Which One Should You Use

Use both, and put the line between them at duration rather than difficulty. Meta AI is the right tool for the question you will not remember asking. It costs nothing in money and something in targeting, and you can shrink that cost by leaving WhatsApp out of your Accounts Center and using Incognito Chat when the subject deserves it.

ChatGPT earns the $20 the moment your work outlives the conversation. Not because it is smarter in the abstract, though on the hard problems it is, but because you can name the model, keep the history and pay your way out of the advertising entirely. If you find yourself running both plus a third assistant, the app switching becomes its own tax, which is the problem a single multi-model Mac client exists to solve.

One date to watch before you commit: Meta Connect runs on 23 and 24 September 2026, and Meta has already teased new hardware and AI announcements. If Muse Spark reaches the consumer assistant in a version Meta is willing to name, the model row in the table above is the one that moves.

FAQ

Is Meta AI better than ChatGPT?

For convenience, yes. For quality on anything substantial, no. Meta AI is already inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger and costs nothing, which wins every quick question. ChatGPT runs named frontier models, keeps your history in one place and handles files and long documents properly, which wins everything you will still care about tomorrow.

What model does Meta AI use?

Muse Spark, from Meta Superintelligence Labs, which took over the Meta AI app and meta.ai in April 2026 and reached the other surfaces over the months after. Meta does not publish which point release the consumer app calls, so any comparison naming a specific version is guessing. Comparisons that still say Llama 4 are more than a year out of date.

Does Meta use my AI chats to target ads?

Yes, since 16 December 2025. Meta announced it would use interactions with its AI to personalise the content and ads you see across its apps. It excludes sensitive topics such as health, religion and political views, and it says WhatsApp interactions are not included unless you add WhatsApp to your Accounts Center.

Does Meta AI have a Mac app?

Yes, since 19 August 2026, and it is still labelled beta. Option and Space opens it over any app, you can point it at a window for live context, and holding Fn dictates into any app. Meta publishes no system requirements; 9to5Mac's launch-day inspection found an Apple silicon build for macOS 15 or later at about 16MB. Most comparison articles still say Meta AI is web and mobile only.

Is ChatGPT free, and does it show ads?

ChatGPT has a free plan with unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna and limits on uploads, images and voice. Ads reached free and Go users across 31 European markets on 24 August 2026. OpenAI's pricing page notes the $8 Go plan "may include ads". Plus at $20 removes them.
