Search for Claude vs Copilot and you get three different comparisons. That is because Microsoft uses the Copilot name for three different products: a free chat app, the assistant inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and GitHub's coding assistant. What most of those comparisons miss is that two of the three already let you run Claude. GitHub Copilot offers Claude models on every paid plan. And Microsoft's own Excel FAQ says the model switcher, Claude included, works on a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription at $19.99 a month, not only on work licences.

So the useful question is not which one is smarter. It is which Copilot you have, and whether it already gives you Claude. This comparison takes each Copilot in turn and sets it against the Claude plan that does the same job. Every price and plan detail comes from Anthropic's, Microsoft's and GitHub's own pages, checked on 26 September 2026. It covers what each one costs, where Claude already sits inside Copilot, what you get on a Mac, and when paying for Claude on its own still makes sense.

The Key Takeaways

  • Copilot is three products: the free Microsoft Copilot app, Copilot inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and GitHub Copilot for code. Microsoft has even renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot to plain Microsoft Copilot.
  • Claude already runs inside two of them: GitHub Copilot Pro at $10 a month includes Claude's Sonnet and Haiku models, with Opus from Pro+ at $39. In Excel, Microsoft's FAQ says Microsoft 365 Premium and work licences get a model switcher that includes Claude.
  • The entry prices are not like for like: Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 billed yearly). Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99, but that price also buys the Office desktop apps and 1 TB of storage.
  • For coding, the cheapest Claude is on GitHub: Copilot Pro puts Claude in your editor for $10. Claude Pro at $20 adds Claude Code, Anthropic's own coding agent, sharing one usage pool with your chats.
  • Both have real Mac apps: Copilot's is in the Mac App Store and needs macOS 14 or later. Claude's is a direct download from Anthropic.

Claude is one product with one set of plans. Copilot is a brand stretched over three products that share a name and little else, so a single verdict would be wrong for two readers out of three. Find the row that matches the Copilot you actually use.

Which Copilot Do You Actually Have?

Microsoft has made this harder, not easier. Its Learn documentation was updated on 3 September 2026 with a new note at the top. "Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is now named Microsoft Copilot Chat." The work product and the free consumer app carry the same name.

The quickest way to tell them apart is where you use it. If you open Copilot in a browser tab or the standalone app with a personal Microsoft account, that is the consumer app. If the Copilot button sits inside Word or Excel on a personal subscription, that is Copilot in Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium. If you signed in with a work account, Excel shows a label. Microsoft's Excel FAQ says "M365 Copilot (Premium)" means your employer bought the Copilot add-on licence, and "M365 Copilot (Basic)" means standard access without it. GitHub Copilot is the odd one out and lives in your code editor and on GitHub. Our guide to every version of Microsoft Copilot goes through each one in detail.

What Claude vs Copilot Costs in 2026

Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page. Microsoft's consumer plans are shown monthly and yearly because Microsoft's page now offers both. Claude's paid plans share one usage pool across the web, desktop and mobile apps and Claude Code, and it resets on a rolling five-hour window with weekly limits on top.

PlanPriceWhat it adds
Claude Free$0Chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, memory
Claude Pro$20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200)Claude Code, Projects, more models, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, Claude for Microsoft 365
Claude Max$100/month (5x) or $200/month (20x)5x or 20x Pro's usage, higher output limits
Microsoft Copilot app$0Limited chat, "subject to available capacity and limits"
Microsoft 365 Personal$9.99/month or $99.99/yearCopilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, 1 TB storage
Microsoft 365 Family$12.99/month or $129.99/yearUp to six people, but AI features stay with the owner
Microsoft 365 Premium$19.99/month or $199.99/yearExtensive usage, Researcher and Analyst agents, the Excel model switcher
Microsoft 365 Pro$99.99/month, monthly billing onlyMicrosoft's highest consumer usage limits
Microsoft 365 Copilot Business$21 per user/month, $18 on promotionWork add-on with model choice; needs an eligible Microsoft 365 business plan
GitHub Copilot Free / Pro / Pro+ / Max$0 / $10 / $39 / $100 a monthAI credits for chat and agents; Claude models from Pro

Two details change the arithmetic. Microsoft says AI benefits on Family and Premium are "only available to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with others", so the family price does not buy Copilot for the family. And the $18 Copilot Business rate is a first-year promotion that Microsoft's storefront runs until 31 December 2026, with an annual commitment. The full breakdowns are in our Claude pricing guide, our Microsoft Copilot pricing guide and the explainer on what free Copilot gives you.

Claude vs the Microsoft Copilot App

This is the comparison most people mean when they have never paid for either. Both have a free tier, and on the Microsoft side the free tier is the whole product until you buy Microsoft 365. Microsoft's own FAQ confirms Copilot is free, then adds that the free version is "subject to available capacity and limits." Claude Free is similar in spirit: chat, web search, file creation and memory, with a usage cap that Anthropic does not state as a number.

The real difference is who chooses the model. Microsoft describes Copilot in its consumer plans as bringing together "AI models selected by Microsoft within a single experience". You do not pick. Claude's apps are built around Anthropic's own model family, and Pro adds more Claude models to choose from.

The paid tiers sell different things. Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 is mostly an Office subscription with Copilot inside it: the desktop apps, 1 TB of OneDrive storage and higher Copilot limits. Claude Pro at $20 is the assistant and nothing else, but a much bigger assistant: Projects, Claude Code, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and Claude inside Chrome and Microsoft 365. Need Office anyway? Personal is the cheaper way to get an assistant on top. If the assistant is the reason you are paying, Claude Pro gives you more of it. The same comparison against OpenAI is in Microsoft Copilot vs ChatGPT and against Google in Copilot vs Gemini.

Claude and Copilot on a Mac

Both companies ship a native Mac app, and they get there differently. Microsoft Copilot is in the Mac App Store under Microsoft Corporation, last updated on 3 September 2026, and needs macOS 14 or later. Claude is not in the Mac App Store at all: you download it from Anthropic's site, which also offers a PKG installer for companies that deploy it to managed Macs. On paid plans, the desktop app can also drive Claude in Chrome, Anthropic's browser extension, so Claude can fill in forms and click through web pages from a chat. Our Claude desktop client for macOS page covers setup, and ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini on Mac compares the Mac apps side by side.

Claude and GPT Without Either Subscription

If what you really want is to ask Claude one question and a GPT model the next, neither of these gets you there at the consumer tier. Microsoft picks Copilot's models for you, and Claude only runs Claude. Fello AI puts Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and others behind one Mac app. It adds web search, PDF chat and Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, for $9.99 a month, the same price as Microsoft 365 Personal. There is a free tier, and it runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Claude vs Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint

This is where the rivalry is least real, because Microsoft now sells Claude inside Copilot. How much of it you get depends on your plan.

Claude Is Already Inside Copilot at Work

On a commercial Copilot licence, Anthropic's models are available in Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and whether you see them depends on where your company is. Microsoft's Learn documentation says it "enables Anthropic models on by default for most customers in commercial cloud (excluding EU/EFTA and UK)". In the EU, EFTA and UK they start switched off, and an administrator has to opt in. When they are used, "data processing for these models occurs outside of the Microsoft EU Data Boundary." The Copilot Business add-on lists "LLM model choice" among its plan highlights.

Microsoft's own Microsoft 365 Insider account announced one stage of that rollout in April, when Claude reached Copilot Chat and Excel. The model it names is already several versions old, which is why this article does not quote version numbers for Copilot.

Microsoft 365 Premium Gets the Switch in Excel

The consumer side has one exception. Microsoft's Copilot in Excel FAQ says Copilot in Excel "supports Claude models from Anthropic and GPT models from OpenAI for editing your workbooks". The same FAQ adds that "using the model switcher requires a commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription or a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription." Microsoft's Excel team announced Claude for Premium licences back in January. Personal and Family subscribers still get Copilot in Excel, but neither page lists them for the switcher, so they work with whatever model Copilot picks.

On Premium, the picker sits in the upper right corner of the Copilot in Excel pane and starts on Auto. Choose Claude there before you send the prompt.

Two limits apply. The switch is documented for Excel, not for Word or PowerPoint on a personal plan. And it does not stick: "Your choice applies only to the active session. When you close Excel, Copilot reverts to the default model." Microsoft's own pages also disagree on file storage. Its Microsoft 365 Premium introduction still says Copilot in Excel "requires AutoSave to be enabled, meaning the file must be saved to OneDrive". Its Copilot in Excel tips page says the opposite: Copilot "runs in workbooks with autosave enabled or disabled." If the Copilot button is greyed out in a local workbook, saving it to OneDrive is still the first thing to try.

Or Bring Claude Into Office Yourself

Anthropic's route runs the other way. Claude for Microsoft 365 is a set of add-ins that put Claude inside Excel, PowerPoint and Word, with Outlook in beta, and it is included in Claude Pro and Max but not Claude Free. Anthropic's help centre lists Excel on the web, Excel on Windows and Excel on Mac version 16.46 or later; Excel on iPad is not supported. Anthropic announced general availability in May. For presentations, Claude Slides also builds decks inside Claude itself on paid plans and exports them to PowerPoint.

Microsoft does not love this arrangement. It runs a comparison page titled "Microsoft Copilot vs. Claude Enterprise: Not all AI is built for work", which argues that the add-ins "can introduce protection risks and compliance gaps" because they rely "on Anthropic's own policies rather than the Microsoft Data Protection Addendum". That matters to an IT department. For someone on a personal Microsoft 365 plan, it is the only route either company offers to Claude inside Word and PowerPoint. OpenAI has built the same thing, covered in our look at the ChatGPT add-in for Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot

For developers, "Claude vs Copilot" usually means Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, against GitHub Copilot. They overlap less than the name suggests, and GitHub has turned Claude into one of Copilot's options.

What $10 and $20 a Month Buy

GitHub Copilot Free gives you 2,000 code completions a month and a small allowance of AI credits, and GitHub's docs say Free users get models through automatic selection only. Copilot Pro at $10 comes with 1,500 AI credits a month for chat and agents, unlimited code completions, and lets you pick the model yourself. According to GitHub's supported models table, Pro includes Claude's Haiku and Sonnet models but not Opus. Pro+ at $39 adds Opus and Anthropic's Fable models, 7,000 credits, and the option to hand tasks to Claude as a third-party coding agent, which GitHub labels a preview. Max at $100 raises the allowance to 20,000 credits.

Claude Pro at $20 includes Claude Code, which Claude Free does not, and the usage comes out of the same pool as your chats. Anthropic's pricing page says every Claude plan resets on a five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans, and pitches Max as "built for people who work with Claude throughout the day". The trade-off is covered in Claude Pro vs Max, and the per-plan detail is in our Claude Code pricing guide. Students should check free GitHub Copilot for students first, since GitHub runs a free Student plan.

Which One to Code With

Want suggestions as you type, inside the editor and pull requests you already use? GitHub Copilot Pro is the cheapest paid way to get them, and at $10 it already includes Claude Sonnet. Want to describe a change and let an agent work across files from the terminal? That is what Claude Code is built for.

Pro+ at $39 sits in between: GitHub's interface, Opus, and Claude as an agent you can assign work to.

Claude vs Copilot: The Verdict

Against the free Copilot app, Claude wins if the assistant is what you are paying for. Microsoft chooses Copilot's models, and Claude Pro bundles far more assistant for $20.

Against Copilot in Office, the contest is mostly over. On Microsoft 365 Premium or a work licence, Claude is already in Excel's model switcher. On Personal or Family, Claude Pro's add-ins are the way to get Claude into Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Against GitHub Copilot, start with Copilot Pro at $10, because it already runs Claude. Move to Claude Pro when you want Claude Code to do the work rather than suggest it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude better than Copilot?

It depends which Copilot you mean. Against the free Microsoft Copilot app, Claude Pro gives you more assistant for the money, including Claude Code and more Claude models, while Microsoft picks Copilot's models for you. In Excel and on GitHub, Copilot already offers Claude models on some plans, so you do not have to choose between them.

Can you use Claude inside Copilot?

Yes, in two places. GitHub Copilot includes Claude's Haiku and Sonnet models from the $10 Pro plan and Opus from Pro+. Copilot in Excel has a model switcher with Claude on Microsoft 365 Premium and on commercial licences. At work, Claude is on by default outside the EU, EFTA and UK, and an admin has to opt in inside them. The free Copilot app has no model choice.

Is Claude or Copilot cheaper?

Both have free tiers. The cheapest paid Microsoft plan with Copilot is Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month, which also includes the Office apps. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. For coding, GitHub Copilot Pro at $10 is the cheapest way to use Claude models.

Which is better for coding, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot is built around suggestions in your editor and on GitHub, and its $10 Pro plan includes Claude Sonnet. Claude Code is an agent that takes a task and works across your files from the terminal. It comes with every paid Claude plan. GitHub Copilot Pro+ at $39 covers both: Claude models inside Copilot and Claude as an agent you can assign tasks to.

Do Claude and Copilot have Mac apps?

Yes. Microsoft Copilot is in the Mac App Store and needs macOS 14 or later. Claude's Mac app is a direct download from Anthropic's website rather than the App Store.
