Every guide to Claude Pro vs Max gives you the same three numbers: 45 messages per five-hour window on Pro, 225 on Max 5x, 900 on Max 20x. Those numbers are quoted so consistently that they read like documentation. They are not. Anthropic does not publish a message count for any plan, and none of the four help centre pages covering usage state one. The Message Counts Everyone Quotes Are Not Anthropic's

Search this question and you will meet 45, 225 and 900 on nearly every result. They appear on SaaS blogs, in AI-generated summaries, and in forum answers, always stated flatly and never sourced. The consistency is the tell: these are one number set being copied between pages.

Anthropic's position is different and much less satisfying. The help centre article on the Max plan says only this: "Max 5x provides five times more usage per session than the Pro plan." Max 20x gets the same sentence with twenty in place of five.

That is a multiplier with no baseline. Three further help pages covering usage limits, length limits and Claude Code carry no message count either.

So the honest answer to "how much more do I get" is: five or twenty times more than a number Anthropic will not tell you. That sounds evasive until you see what governs it.

What Actually Drains Your Allowance

Anthropic's usage guidance lists the factors that decide how fast you burn through a session: message length, file attachment size, current conversation length, tool usage, model choice, effort level, and artifact creation and usage. Conversation length is the one that catches people. Every message you send re-reads the thread, so a long conversation gets more expensive with each turn, regardless of how short your latest question was.

This is why a fixed message count could never have been accurate. Forty short questions in fresh threads and forty follow-ups deep inside one long document review are not the same amount of work, and the meter knows the difference. The Two Meters That Cut You Off

Claude runs a session limit and a weekly limit at the same time, and knowing which one stopped you changes what you should do. Anthropic's usage guidance tells you to check when your plan's weekly limit resets "for Opus only and all other models," which means heavy Opus use can strand you on that model while everything else keeps working. The upgrade costs $80 a month over Pro. The useful way to judge it is not "am I a power user" but arithmetic: how often does a limit stop paid work, and what is that interruption worth?

Max is the right call in three situations. Pro's five-hour window blocks you on most working days rather than occasionally. You routinely work inside very long threads or large attached documents. Or you run Claude Code or Cowork for hours at a stretch, where a reset breaks a chain of work rather than a single question.

It is also the only way to get Fable included rather than metered. That matters if Fable is the model you reach for.

Max 20x at $200 is a narrower case again. It is built for sustained all-day use and parallel agent sessions. If you are weighing 5x against 20x without a clear reason, you want 5x. You can move up later; almost nobody needs to start there.

Where Pro Is Still the Right Answer

Pro is enough for most people, and hitting the cap occasionally is not evidence otherwise. If you are stopped once or twice a week, the cheaper fix is usually workflow rather than money.

Start fresh threads instead of extending old ones. Attach the pages you need rather than the whole document. Keep reference material in a project so it caches instead of being re-sent.
