Apple announced the iPad mini OLED on 26 October 2026: an 8.5-inch OLED screen, the A20 Pro chip and IP67 water resistance, from $699. Pre-orders open on 28 October and the first units arrive on 6 November. The headline specs hide a split that matters for anyone buying it for AI: only the $999 512GB model gets the full A20 Pro with the Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

This guide covers what every configuration costs and why the screen is almost certainly still 60Hz. It then unpacks what Apple's "4.5x faster AI" claim actually measured, and which model to buy for Siri AI, local language models or on-device image generation. The short version: most people should not pay $300 extra for the AI chip.

The Key Takeaways

  • Price: the iPad mini OLED starts at $699 for 128GB Wi-Fi, up from $599, and the predecessor launched at $499 in 2024.
  • Two chips: 128GB and 256GB models get a 5-core CPU and one 16-core Neural Engine. Only the $999 512GB model gets a 6-core CPU and the Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
  • The 4.5x claim: Apple measured time to first token on a 4-billion-parameter model in the Locally AI app, and every configuration has the same 7-core GPU behind that figure.
  • Screen: Apple lists no ProMotion and no refresh rate for the OLED panel, so reviewers expect 60Hz. ProMotion stays exclusive to the iPad Pro.
  • Siri AI: ships in beta with iPadOS 27, behind a waitlist, and is not available in the EU on iPadOS. The old A17 Pro mini runs it too.

The iPad mini OLED costs $699 for 128GB Wi-Fi and $849 for 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular in the US, according to Apple's press release. Pre-orders open on Wednesday, 28 October, in 36 countries and regions. Deliveries and Apple Store availability start on Friday, 6 November.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, opened the launch week with it:

Each step up in storage adds $100, except the jump to 512GB, which adds $200. The optional nano-texture glass costs another $100 and is only sold on the 256GB and 512GB models. These are the US prices from Apple's online store on launch day:

ConfigurationWi-FiWi-Fi + CellularNano-textureChip
128GB$699$849Not offered5-core CPU, 16-core Neural Engine
256GB$799$949+$1005-core CPU, 16-core Neural Engine
512GB$999$1,149+$1006-core CPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine

Apple's Smart Folio costs $79, Apple Pencil Pro $129 and Apple Pencil (USB-C) $79. The fully loaded model, 512GB with cellular and nano-texture glass, costs $1,249 before accessories.

Why the iPad mini Costs $200 More Than It Did in 2024

The iPad mini has risen in price twice in four months. The A17 Pro model launched at $499 in October 2024. Apple raised it to $599 on 25 June 2026, in a price rise across Macs and iPads. MacTech attributed that rise to "the rising cost of memory and storage chips." The iPad mini OLED now starts at $699.

That history explains why launch-day posts disagree about the size of the increase. Against the $599 price the A17 Pro mini sold for until today, the new model is $100 more. Against the $499 it launched at, it is $200 more. Both numbers are correct.

Is the iPad mini OLED 60Hz?

Almost certainly, yes. Apple's press release and the iPad mini tech specs page describe the OLED panel's brightness, contrast and resolution, but neither mentions ProMotion or a refresh rate. MacRumors, 9to5Mac, Tom's Guide and Gizmodo all read that silence as a 60Hz display.

Marques Brownlee flagged the same gap within an hour of the announcement, after praising the screen and the chip:

ProMotion remains an iPad Pro feature. Apple's iPad Pro specs list "ProMotion technology with adaptive refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz," while the iPad Air and the base iPad specs list no ProMotion at all. The iPad mini OLED sits with them.

The OLED upgrade is still large. The new panel reaches 1,200 nits peak brightness for HDR content and 600 nits for everyday SDR use, against 500 nits on the A17 Pro model. It drops to 1 nit for reading in the dark and has a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. For reading, video and chatting with an AI assistant, contrast and brightness matter more than motion smoothness. For scrolling and gaming, an expected 60Hz panel on a $699 tablet in 2026 is the weakest spec on the sheet.

The iPad mini OLED Ships With Two Different A20 Pro Chips

The A20 Pro in the 128GB and 256GB iPad mini OLED is a cut-down version of the chip. Apple's tech specs list a 5-core CPU (2 super cores and 3 efficiency cores) and a single 16-core Neural Engine for those models. The 512GB model gets a 6-core CPU (2 super cores and 4 efficiency cores) and the Dual 16-core Neural Engine. All three share the same 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in every core.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman spotted the split minutes after the launch:

The full chip is not rare. The iPhone 18 Pro specs list the 6-core CPU and the Dual 16-core Neural Engine as standard, and the iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro. On the iPad mini OLED, you have to buy 512GB of storage to get it. The A17 Pro iPad mini had a 6-core CPU at every storage tier. On paper, the $699 model has one CPU core fewer than the model it replaces.

What Apple's 4.5x AI Claim Actually Measured

Apple says Neural Accelerators in the GPU speed up AI tasks "by up to 4.5x for large language model (LLM) token generation." The footnote behind that number describes a narrower test: time to first token, with a 1,000-token prompt, on a 4-billion-parameter model in the Locally AI app. Apple ran it on preproduction iPad mini OLED units against a production A17 Pro iPad mini.

Time to first token is how long a local model takes to read your prompt before it starts answering. It is the delay you feel when you paste a long document into a local model. It is not the same as how fast the answer streams out afterwards. Apple says the A20 Pro has more than twice the unified memory bandwidth of the previous model, but it gave no figure for that streaming speed.

The detail that matters for buyers: the LLM footnote does not say which A20 Pro was tested. Apple's CPU and Neural Engine footnotes both specify the "6-core CPU" model. The LLM one does not, and the GPU that runs the test is identical on all three configurations. Read literally, the 4.5x figure applies to the $699 model too.

What the Dual Neural Engine Actually Speeds Up

Apple says the Dual 16-core Neural Engine on the 512GB model delivers "twice the peak compute power for on-device AI." Its footnote names one test: Draw Things generating a 1024 by 1024 image with a 12-billion-parameter model in 8 steps, with the app's Neural Engine setting switched on. Apple ran it on the 6-core model.

That is the clearest case for the 512GB iPad mini OLED. It suits apps that send work to the Neural Engine rather than the GPU, and on-device image generation is Apple's own example. Apple also names the Detail app among those that benefit. It has not published a head-to-head between the two A20 Pro versions, so the real-world gap between the $799 and $999 models is unknown until independent testing lands.

What AI Can You Run on the iPad mini OLED?

Every iPad mini OLED runs Siri AI, Apple Intelligence, local language models and on-device image generation. The storage tier changes how fast the heaviest of those run, not which ones you get.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence on iPadOS 27

The iPad mini OLED ships with iPadOS 27 and Siri AI, Apple's rebuilt assistant, in beta. Apple's support page says Siri AI is currently available in English, and the iPad mini footnotes add French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish "to start." Siri AI "will not be initially available in the EU on iPadOS," and it is not available to users under 13. Apple's support page adds that turning Siri AI on puts you on a waitlist. Features that use Apple's server models, including Siri AI, Image Playground and the photo editing tools, have daily usage limits. Apple says expanded access "will be available for a fee in the future." Our explainer on what Siri AI is and how the beta works covers the assistant itself.

The rest of Apple Intelligence comes with it: Clean Up, Spatial Reframing and Extend in Photos, a photorealistic Image Playground, and Image Wand in Notes. Safari gets Notify Me, which watches a page for a restock or a price drop.

One number is missing. Apple does not publish how much memory the iPad mini OLED has, so any RAM figure you read is a guess.

Local LLMs and On-Device Image Generation

Apple's press release pitches the iPad mini OLED for "running local LLMs." Its product page features Locally AI by LM Studio, the free app Apple used for its 4.5x test. Its App Store listing says it runs Llama, Gemma, Qwen and other open models offline, with no login. Draw Things, the free image generator Apple used for its Neural Engine test, does the same for images.

A local model on a tablet is private and works on a plane, but it is small: Apple's own test used a 4-billion-parameter model. Expect quick drafts and summaries, not the depth of the cloud models behind ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. For a ranked list of what is worth installing, see our guide to the best AI apps for iPad.

Which iPad mini OLED Should You Buy for AI?

Buy the 256GB iPad mini OLED for $799 if AI is one reason among several. Buy the 512GB model for $999 only if you plan to run local models or generate images on the device every week. The 128GB model is fine for Siri AI and cloud chat apps, but every local model you download is stored on the device, next to iPadOS 27 and your apps.

If Your AI Lives in the Cloud

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answer from their makers' servers, so the $699 iPad mini OLED gets the same answers as the $999 one. The harder problem on an 8.5-inch screen is juggling three chat apps and three subscriptions. With Fello AI you don't have to pick one: ask GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity from a single app, and switch when an answer looks off. It runs on iPad, iPhone and Mac.

Should You Upgrade From the A17 Pro iPad mini?

Upgrade if the screen bothers you or you want water resistance. Skip it if you bought the A17 Pro model for reading and AI. Apple's Siri AI support page lists the iPad mini (A17 Pro), so it already runs Siri AI and Apple Intelligence on iPadOS 27. Apple's support specs for the A17 Pro model and the new tech specs page give this comparison:

Apple's new Acoustic Display drives woofers through the screen and hides tweeters between the glass and the aluminum case. The front camera moves to the landscape edge, and iPadOS 27.2 adds extended display support. The Verdict: A Great Small Tablet, and a $999 AI Tablet

The iPad mini OLED fixes the screen that held the mini back, and the $799 256GB model is the one to buy. It runs every AI feature Apple ships, it runs the same GPU behind Apple's local LLM claim, and it has room for a few local models. The Dual Neural Engine is real, but Apple has tied it to 512GB of storage and a $999 price, and its only published test is one image-generation benchmark. Wait for independent tests before paying $200 more for it. If smooth scrolling matters more to you than any of this, the iPad Pro is still the only iPad with ProMotion.
