ChatGPT is the best AI app for Mac for most people in 2026, because its free tier already includes voice chats and a limited version of OpenAI's ChatGPT Work agent in the desktop app. Claude is the stronger pick for long writing and coding, and LM Studio or Ollama is the answer if nothing may leave your Mac. Every other choice comes down to three questions. Is the app native or built on Electron? Do you pay one subscription or bring your own API key? And does the model run in the cloud or on your own machine?

This guide answers those three questions for 12 apps, from the official ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity clients to multi-model apps and free local runners. The ground moved this summer. On 9 July OpenAI replaced its native Mac app with a 1.5 GB Electron build, yet the top-ranking guide for this search still praises ChatGPT's "Native Mac experience".

Disclosure: Fello AI publishes this guide and makes the Fello AI app, one of the 12 below. We rank it where it wins and say plainly where it loses. Every rival price was checked on the vendor's own page on 10 October 2026.

The Key Takeaways

  • Best for most people: ChatGPT. The free tier includes voice and limited ChatGPT Work on desktop, and the app runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs from macOS 14.
  • Native vs Electron: the new ChatGPT app, Claude and LM Studio are Electron. Gemini, Perplexity, BoltAI and Fello AI are native, and Raycast 2.0 is a hybrid of Swift and a web view.
  • One subscription vs API keys: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro together cost $59.99 a month. Fello AI bundles the major models for $11.99 with no keys, while BoltAI ($79 once) and TypingMind ($39 once) make you pay each provider yourself.
  • Local and free: LM Studio, Ollama and Jan cost nothing and keep every prompt on your Mac. Jan's own guidance is 16 GB of RAM for a 7B model.
  • Already on your Mac: Apple Intelligence is free on any Mac with M1 or later running macOS 27, with daily limits on its server-side features.

How to choose the best AI app for Mac: three questions

Three questions sort every AI app for Mac: how it is built, how you pay, and where the model runs. Answer them in order and 12 apps shrink to two or three.

Native, Electron or hybrid?

A native Mac app is written with Apple's own frameworks, such as AppKit or SwiftUI. An Electron app bundles a copy of the Chromium browser and runs a web interface inside it. The difference shows up as download size, memory use and how Mac-like the menus, shortcuts and windows feel.

The ChatGPT example makes the gap concrete. John Gruber at Daring Fireball measured the two ChatGPT apps: the native app, now called ChatGPT Classic, is a 159 MB bundle, and the new combined app is a 1.5 GB Electron bundle. Fello AI's App Store download is 50.4 MB.

That is nearly ten times the size for the same chatbot.

Hybrid apps sit in between. Raycast 2.0 keeps a native Swift shell for hotkeys, windows and the menu bar, and draws its interface with React inside the system's own web view. Jan does something similar through the Tauri framework. Neither ships a private copy of Chromium the way Electron does.

One subscription or your own API key?

An official app or an all-in-one app charges one monthly fee and handles model access for you. A bring-your-own-key app sells you the software, often once, and you paste in API keys from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google and pay them per use.

The subscription route is simpler and its bill is predictable. The API-key route is cheaper for light users and more expensive for heavy ones, and it means opening a developer account with each provider. BoltAI's own FAQ answers the question directly: it does not bundle AI credits, so cloud usage is billed by your providers under your own accounts.

Cloud chat app or local model runner?

Cloud apps send your prompt to the vendor's servers, which is where the most capable models live. Local runners download an open model to your Mac and answer with no internet connection, so nothing you type leaves the machine.

The price of local AI is hardware. Open models that fit in a laptop's memory are smaller than the frontier models in the cloud apps, and the amount of unified memory in your Mac sets the ceiling. The practical setup is one cloud app for hard questions and, if privacy matters, one local runner for sensitive files.

Official AI chat apps for Mac

The official apps from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity get each vendor's newest features first, including voice, agents and screen sharing. None of the four is on the Mac App Store, so each one installs from the vendor's website.

ChatGPT: the best AI app for Mac for most people

ChatGPT is the best all-round AI app for Mac because its free tier already includes voice chats and limited access to ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's agent, in the desktop app. Since 9 July 2026 the ChatGPT desktop app combines Chat, Work and Codex in one window, and OpenAI's help page lists macOS 14 on either Apple Silicon or Intel as the requirement. Press ⌥ Space anywhere and a chat bar opens.

The trade-off is the app itself. The new ChatGPT app is Electron, and at launch it moved ordinary chats to a floating window with no access to past conversations or Projects. 9to5Mac reported on 17 July that an update restored a Chat and Work toggle at the top of the window. The old native app lives on as ChatGPT Classic, which OpenAI says "continues to be supported", so readers who only want to chat can keep the lighter app. If either version misbehaves, our guide to fixing the ChatGPT Mac app covers the usual repairs.

ChatGPT costs nothing to start. Go is $8 a month and, on OpenAI's own pricing page, "may include ads". Plus is $20 and Pro starts at $100.

Claude: best for writing, coding and agent work

Claude's Mac app is the pick for long writing and coding, because the same window holds chat, Claude Code and Cowork, Anthropic's agent for multi-step tasks. Anthropic's support pages say Cowork is available on every paid plan in the desktop app, and Anthropic is now folding it into the main Claude experience, starting with Pro and Max. Claude Desktop runs on macOS 11 Big Sur or later, well below ChatGPT's macOS 14 and Gemini's macOS 15, and ships as one universal download for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

The trade-off is polish. Claude Desktop is an Electron app, and Mac writers have been blunt about it: John Gruber called it "a lazy Electron clunker" in March 2026. The agent features also need a paid plan. Claude is free to try, and Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly, with Max from $100. For a model-by-model comparison of the three biggest vendors on a Mac, see our test of ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini on Mac.

Gemini: best for Google users

Gemini's Mac app is the best choice for people whose files live in Google Drive, Google Photos and NotebookLM, and it is free. Google launched it in April 2026 as a native app, written in Swift, and Google's download page lists an Apple Silicon Mac and macOS Sequoia 15 or later as requirements. Intel Macs cannot run it.

The trade-off is behaviour, not speed. Gruber reported in June that the app installs a GeminiAppLauncher login item and a GoogleUpdater background process without asking, and silently adds them back if you remove them. Gemini also defaults to ⌥ Space, the same shortcut as ChatGPT and Fello AI, so installing two of them means remapping one. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro $19.99 and Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99.

Perplexity: best for answers with sources

Perplexity is the Mac app to pick when every answer needs to show where it came from. It launched as a native Mac app in October 2024 and works as a research tool first. Perplexity's own Pro page promises that every answer includes inline citations, so each claim links to the page it came from.

The trade-off is control. Perplexity lists choosing between AI models as a Pro feature, so free users cannot pick the model that answers. Pro costs $17 a month when billed yearly.

Apple Intelligence: the free AI already on your Mac

Apple Intelligence is the AI app you already own if your Mac has an M1 chip or later. It ships inside macOS 27 Golden Gate at no charge, so there is nothing to install or subscribe to. It powers Writing Tools, Image Playground and the new Siri AI, still in beta, across Apple's own apps.

The trade-offs are reach and limits. Apple's support page lists a Mac with M1 or later, or the MacBook Neo, as the minimum. It needs up to 8 GB of storage, or up to 14 GB on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of memory. Features that rely on Apple's servers, including Siri AI and Image Playground, carry daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access "will be available for a fee in the future". People who want AI on an Intel Mac or a Mac without Apple Intelligence have options in our guide to Apple Intelligence alternatives for Mac.

Multi-model AI apps for Mac

A multi-model app puts GPT, Claude, Gemini and other models in one window, which saves money once you would otherwise pay for more than one official subscription. ChatGPT Plus ($20), Claude Pro ($20) and Google AI Pro ($19.99) add up to $59.99 a month. The three apps below split on the API-key question: Fello AI is one subscription with no keys, while BoltAI and TypingMind sell the software and leave the model bills to you.

Our ranked list of the best ChatGPT alternatives for Mac covers this category in more depth, including Msty, Poe and Elephas.

Fello AI: every major model for one subscription

Fello AI is the multi-model app for people who want the major models on their Mac, iPhone and iPad for one App Store subscription, without creating a single API key. It is our app, so weigh this entry with that in mind. One chat window switches between GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi and others, and the same conversation syncs to your iPhone and iPad. Fello AI also builds real PowerPoint, Excel and Word files from a chat, searches the web and exports to PDF.

Fello AI is native and small: 50.4 MB on the App Store, running on macOS 12 Monterey or later on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The Fello AI Floating Chat Bar opens over any app with ⌥ Space. The free tier allows five questions an hour with premium models and then switches to a free model until the hour resets. Paid plans cost $11.99 a month or $89.99 a year.

The trade-offs are real. Fello AI has no equivalent of ChatGPT's real-time voice mode, Claude's persistent memory tools or Gemini's Google Workspace integration. Nor does it offer an agent that operates your Mac on its own, the way ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork do.

Fello AI is also cloud-only. It is not the app for prompts that must never leave your Mac.

BoltAI: native app for your own API keys

BoltAI is the best multi-model app for people who already have API keys and want a native Mac client around them. BoltAI's site says the app is built with SwiftUI and AppKit, connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral and others through your own keys, and also talks to local models through Ollama and LM Studio. It can even use an existing ChatGPT or Claude subscription through the Codex CLI or Claude Code integration.

The trade-off is setup and a second bill. You pay BoltAI once, $79 for the Essential licence, $99 for Pro or $199 for Pro+ on BoltAI's pricing page, and then pay each AI provider for what you use.

That suits developers and heavy API users more than someone who just wants to chat.

TypingMind: browser workspace with a one-time price

TypingMind is a browser-based chat workspace that you buy once and feed with your own API keys. The Standard licence costs $39 once, Extended $79, and Premium $99, discounted from $198, which adds parallel chats with several models at once. TypingMind charges no markup on the API calls, and it also connects to local models through Ollama.

The trade-off is that TypingMind is not a Mac app any more. TypingMind now tells users of its old Mac app that it will get no further updates, and points them to the PWA desktop app, which is the website installed as an app. Every model bill is yours on top.

Raycast AI: AI inside your Mac launcher

Raycast AI is the right choice for people who already run their Mac from the keyboard, because it puts AI chat in the same launcher they use to open apps, search files and run commands. AI is not part of Raycast's Free plan. Raycast's pricing page lists Pro at $10 a month with 500 AI credits, Plus at $20 with 3,000 credits and Max at $50 with 7,500, and each model spends credits at its own rate. Raycast's AI page adds that you can plug in your own API keys or an existing Claude or ChatGPT subscription without spending credits, and run local models.

Raycast is a useful case for the native question. Raycast's engineers wrote in May 2026 that version 1 was a native Swift and AppKit app. Raycast 2.0 was rewritten as a Swift shell that loads a React interface in the system web view. They chose that hybrid over Electron because Raycast needs low-level access to hotkeys, the clipboard and floating panels. The trade-off for readers is the credit meter: on Raycast's own plans, the top-tier models need Plus or Max, and heavy use drains a Pro allowance quickly unless you bring your own keys. If you want AI one click away rather than in a launcher, compare the AI menu bar apps for Mac.

Local AI apps for Mac: LM Studio, Ollama and Jan

Local AI apps run an open model on your own Mac, so they work offline, cost nothing and never send a prompt anywhere. LM Studio, Ollama and Jan are all free. Memory sets the limit: Jan's documentation recommends 8 GB of RAM for 3B models, 16 GB for 7B and 32 GB for 13B, and LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more. If you are shopping for hardware for this, see which MacBook to buy for AI.

LM Studio: best local AI app for beginners

LM Studio is the easiest way to start with local AI on an Apple Silicon Mac. It searches, downloads and runs open models from one window, using both llama.cpp and Apple's MLX framework, and the Free plan covers everything local. Optional paid plans add US-hosted open models.

The trade-offs are hardware and weight. LM Studio's system requirements call for an M1 or newer chip and macOS 14, and state that Intel Macs are not supported. The app is built on Electron, according to the description of its official binary package for Linux.

Ollama: best local engine for Intel Macs and power users

Ollama is the local runner to choose when other apps need to plug into your models, or when your Mac has an Intel chip. Ollama's macOS documentation lists macOS 14 Sonoma or later and supports Apple M-series chips on CPU and GPU, and Intel chips on CPU only. BoltAI and TypingMind both connect to Ollama, so one set of downloaded models serves several apps.

Ollama is not Electron. We listed the files inside the Ollama download on 10 October 2026: it contains no Electron framework, and it ships Apple's MLX libraries alongside llama.cpp. The trade-off on an Intel Mac is speed: Ollama runs there on the CPU only, with no GPU acceleration.

Jan: best open-source local AI app

Jan is the pick for people who want their local AI app to be open source. Jan is free under the Apache 2.0 licence, runs on macOS 13.6 or later according to Jan's GitHub page, and is built with Tauri, which uses the system web view instead of bundling Chromium. It can also connect to cloud APIs when a local model is not enough.

The trade-off is the same memory ceiling as every local runner. On an 8 GB Mac, Jan's own guidance points you to 3B models, which are far behind the cloud apps on hard questions.

Which AI app should you install on your Mac?

Install the free ChatGPT app first, because it covers chat, voice and a taste of agent work on any Mac from macOS 14, Intel included. Keep ChatGPT Classic if you only want to chat and prefer a lighter native app.

Add Claude if you write or code for a living, and Gemini if your files live in Google Drive. The moment you are about to pay for a second $20 subscription, switch to a multi-model app instead. Pick Fello AI at $11.99 a month if you want no API keys and the same app on your iPhone. Pick BoltAI if you already manage keys and want local models in the same window. Add LM Studio, or Ollama on an Intel Mac, for anything that must stay on your machine. Dictation is a separate job with its own winners, tested in our round-up of the best AI dictation apps for Mac.
