How to Delete Images From ChatGPT Library

For generated images, the method OpenAI documents is to delete the source conversation. Call that what it is: a limitation, not a design. Users have been asking for a delete button on OpenAI's own community forum since April 2025, and four of those threads are still open. They rank in Google precisely because the demand has gone unmet for so long. They are user posts, not OpenAI statements, so they tell you about the appetite, not the roadmap.

On the web

1. Open the Images tab in the sidebar and find the image you want gone.
2. Select it in the grid, open the ••• menu on the image and choose Open chat. This is the step almost everyone misses, because clicking the image itself opens the editor rather than the conversation. How to Delete Files From the Library Tab

1. Open Library from the left-hand sidebar.

When you delete a chat, it is removed from your history view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. The same window applies to deleted Library files. Storage Limits and Why Your Library Fills Up

Before 14 May 2026 this section would not have existed. That day OpenAI introduced storage management across plans, and the Library stopped being free space. Storage covers files you upload and files created in ChatGPT, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations and images.

The top-ranking guide for this question was published on 17 April 2025, two days after the Images tab launched. It is accurate about the Images tab and has no idea the Library tab exists, because it would not exist for another eleven months. Most of the pages below it inherited the same frame.

The March 2026 news coverage has the opposite problem. It was accurate on the day and has aged badly. No OpenAI documentation supports the newer-images behaviour, so treat it as an observation rather than a specification. Practically it costs you nothing to check: open the ••• menu on a recent image and look for a Delete entry. If it is there, use it.
