Yes, ChatGPT can make a PowerPoint, and since 16 October 2026 it has three official ways to do it. Every plan, including Free, can build slides inside Microsoft PowerPoint with the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in. ChatGPT Work creates presentation files from a prompt. And the new ChatGPT Slides builds a deck your whole team can edit, but only on Pro, Business and Enterprise.

So the real question behind "can ChatGPT make a PowerPoint" is which route your plan gives you. Most guides ranking for this search were written before Slides existed, and they disagree about what the free plan can do. This guide works from OpenAI's own help center and pricing page as of 17 October 2026. It covers what each plan gets, how to use each route and a prompt that works on all three. It ends with Claude, which puts its own slide builder on every plan.

The Key Takeaways

  • Every plan can make a deck: the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in works on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Free and Go get limited usage.
  • ChatGPT Slides is not for everyone: it launched on 16 October 2026 for Pro (from $100 a month), Business and Enterprise accounts with Space access, and it is still rolling out.
  • Plus ($20 a month) gets the middle route: ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, which creates presentation files and native Google Slides. Free and Go get limited Work access in the desktop app only.
  • Slides exports cleanly: on the web to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. The desktop app opens a deck in PowerPoint or Keynote if you have them installed.
  • Claude is the cheaper comparison: Claude Slides has been on every Claude plan, Free included, since 8 October 2026, eight days before ChatGPT Slides shipped.

ChatGPT can make a PowerPoint on every plan, but each plan reaches it through a different door. OpenAI now documents three first-party routes, and they differ in where the deck lives, who can edit it and what you pay.

RouteWhere it runsWhat you getPlansThe catch
ChatGPT for PowerPointA sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPointEditable slides in the deck you have openAll plans; Free and Go limitedYou need PowerPoint; style matching is imperfect
ChatGPT WorkThe Work tab in ChatGPTA presentation file, or a native Google Slides deckPlus, Pro, Business, Enterprise; Free and Go limited on desktopDraws on your plan's agentic usage
ChatGPT SlidesSpace, on the web and in the desktop appA shared deck your team edits live, then exportsPro, Business, Enterprise with Space accessStill rolling out; not on Plus

The add-in is the most open of the three: every plan gets it, and it works inside PowerPoint itself rather than in a ChatGPT app. OpenAI made ChatGPT for PowerPoint generally available on 6 July 2026, and its official ChatGPT account announced the release like this:

Older guides often add a fourth route: asking the regular ChatGPT chat for a downloadable .pptx file. Some testers report getting one on the free plan and others report getting only text, and OpenAI's help center does not document it either way. The three routes in this guide are the ones OpenAI supports and describes.

Which ChatGPT Plan Do You Need for PowerPoint?

Any ChatGPT plan can make a PowerPoint through the add-in, Plus adds full ChatGPT Work, and only Pro, Business and Enterprise get ChatGPT Slides. The table below shows each plan's access to the three routes, with US prices from OpenAI's pricing page as listed on 17 October 2026.

PlanPricePowerPoint add-inChatGPT WorkChatGPT Slides
Free$0LimitedLimited, desktop app onlyNo
Go$8 a monthLimitedLimited, desktop app onlyNo
Plus$20 a monthYesDesktop, web and mobileNo
Pro$100, $200 or $500 a monthExpandedDesktop, web and mobileYes, with Space
BusinessFrom $25 per user a month ($20 billed yearly)YesIncluded in Standard seatsYes, with Space
EnterpriseNot listed publiclyYesYesYes, with Space

Plus is the plan that catches people out. At $20 a month it has full ChatGPT Work and full add-in access, but OpenAI's pricing page lists ChatGPT Space as unavailable on Plus, and Slides lives in Space. A Plus subscriber who wants the new collaborative editor has to move to Pro, which now comes in three tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month. For a full breakdown of what else changes between the tiers, see our ChatGPT pricing guide and the ChatGPT Plus vs Pro comparison.

Usage limits apply on every route. OpenAI's help center says Free and Go include "limited usage access" to the add-in, while Plus, Pro and Business use it "subject to your plan's agentic usage limit". Larger decks and multi-step edits use more of that allowance.

Can ChatGPT Make a PowerPoint for Free?

Yes, ChatGPT can make a PowerPoint for free through the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in, which OpenAI lists for Free accounts with limited usage. The add-in runs in a sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint, so the slides it builds are ordinary editable PowerPoint slides, not pictures of slides.

How to Install the ChatGPT Add-in for PowerPoint

OpenAI's ChatGPT for PowerPoint help article lists six steps:

  1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint.
  2. Go to Home.
  3. Go to Add-ins.
  4. Search for ChatGPT.
  5. Add it, then open ChatGPT from the ribbon.
  6. Sign in with the ChatGPT account that has access.

In a company, a Microsoft 365 admin may have to deploy the add-in for you or enable it in workspace settings. If the ChatGPT button is missing from your ribbon at work, that is the usual reason.

What to Ask the ChatGPT for PowerPoint Add-in

The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in works best with a specific request that names what to change and what to leave alone. OpenAI's help article lists six prompts to try, and they make a good starting set. Paste one into the sidebar and adjust it:

Build a 10-slide board update from these notes and KPIs.
Add a risks slide after the market overview.
Tighten this deck for an executive audience.
Turn this memo into 5 slides.
Make these slides match our house style.
What is the story of this deck?

For bigger changes, OpenAI suggests asking for a plan first: "Before editing, outline which slides you would change and why." That one line saves a lot of undoing.

Where the ChatGPT for PowerPoint Add-in Falls Short

The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in does not always match your template. OpenAI's help article says generated or edited slides "may not always match a preferred style perfectly". It adds that some advanced chart, shape, formatting and slide-management capabilities could be limited or still in development. OpenAI also warns that ChatGPT can make mistakes when editing or deleting content, so duplicate an important file before you start. For Microsoft's own Copilot and other AI tools inside PowerPoint, see our guide to AI in PowerPoint.

How to Make a Presentation With ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work makes a presentation when you open the Work tab, describe the deck and attach your source material. OpenAI introduced Work on 9 July 2026 as "an agent for longer, more involved tasks" that can "create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites". Our ChatGPT Work guide covers the agent in full.

Step by Step in ChatGPT Work

OpenAI's help article on creating files with Work gives a five-step pattern that applies to decks:

  1. Open Work and describe the presentation and how you will use it.
  2. Attach the notes, report or spreadsheet the deck should come from.
  3. Name the output format and where ChatGPT should create the file.
  4. Say what must stay unchanged, such as branding, slide order or approved figures.
  5. Review the deck and ask for changes before you share it.

For a presentation, OpenAI's advice is to "name the sections, slide types, and visual checks you expect". If you want a native Google Slides deck rather than a file, connect Google Drive first: Work creates and edits native Google Slides when the Google Workspace app is enabled.

Reuse Your Own Template in ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work can follow a deck you already have. Attach a reference presentation for a one-off match, or, in Work on the web, select @Template-Creator to save a .pptx or Google Slides deck as a reusable template. Selecting @Presentations then opens a Templates gallery, and OpenAI's guide to slide decks says the desktop app uses @Presentations to create or edit a PowerPoint file. It builds the file; it does not drive the PowerPoint app the way the add-in does.

Who Gets ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work is fully available on Plus and Pro across desktop, web and mobile, and Business Standard seats include it. OpenAI's pricing page also lists "Limited ChatGPT Work access on desktop" for Free and Go. On the web and mobile, Work has been for paid plans except Free and Go since its July launch. If you are on Free and see a Work tab in the desktop app, that is why. Work draws on the same agentic usage allowance as the add-in, so a long deck on a low plan can hit the limit quickly.

What Is ChatGPT Slides?

ChatGPT Slides is a collaborative presentation editor inside ChatGPT Space, launched on 16 October 2026 for Pro, Business and Enterprise users with Space access. It turns a conversation, files or an outline into a deck, lets teammates edit the same deck in real time and exports the result to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides.

OpenAI announced Slides alongside Space at its 29 September launch, but held it back. The official ChatGPT account's Space post ended with a promise:

Seventeen days later, OpenAI's release notes said Slides "is rolling out to eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise users with Space access on the web and in the desktop app". The rollout is gradual. OpenAI's Slides help article says that if you don't see Slides yet, "it may not be available for your account".

How to Make a Deck in ChatGPT Slides

ChatGPT Slides has two starting points. Open Work and ask for a slide, presentation or deck, describing the topic, audience and material, and ChatGPT creates an editable presentation you can open in Space. Or open Space and select Create > Slide to start from a blank slide or a template. OpenAI's sample prompt shows the shape that works: "Create a six-slide project update from these notes. Cover progress, risks, and next steps." Its last line points ChatGPT at a saved template to guide the style.

Once the deck exists, you can edit text, images, shapes, tables and charts by hand. To change one element with ChatGPT, select it, choose Request edits and describe the change, or use the prompt bar for changes across the deck. ChatGPT can also generate custom images for slides or use images you upload.

Sharing and Comments in ChatGPT Slides

ChatGPT Slides lets everyone with edit access work on the same deck at the same time. Shared comments support @mentions, and @mentioning ChatGPT in a comment asks it to make the edit. One gap at launch: comment-only access is not available, so a reviewer needs edit rights to leave feedback.

Exporting ChatGPT Slides to PowerPoint and Keynote

ChatGPT Slides exports to three formats on the web: PowerPoint (.pptx) to keep editing, PDF to share a read-only copy, and Google Slides to continue there. You can also present directly from ChatGPT. In the desktop app, OpenAI says you can open the deck "in PowerPoint or Keynote if the app is installed", and on macOS show the file in Finder. Keynote is one of two options on the Mac, not the default.

Windows has one exception. On Windows devices without a component OpenAI calls MXC, the desktop app builds and edits local .pptx files instead of collaborative Slides. Windows 10 does not support that component, and Windows 11 may need an update or an admin to enable it. OpenAI's workaround is cloud mode or ChatGPT on the web.

A ChatGPT Presentation Prompt That Works on Any Route

The same prompt structure works in the add-in, in Work and in Slides: name the audience, the slide count, the source and the rules. Copy this, fill in the brackets and attach your material:

Make a [10]-slide presentation for [the leadership team] from the attached [quarterly report]. One idea per slide, with a headline that states the takeaway. No more than three bullets per slide. Put numbers in charts, not text. Keep every figure exactly as it appears in the source, and list any slide where you had to guess.

Then refine one thing at a time rather than regenerating the whole deck:

Before you change anything, list which slides you would edit to make this deck work for [a customer audience] and why. Wait for my go.

OpenAI's own starter prompt for @Presentations makes the same point: "check the finished slides for layout or formatting issues" and "briefly flag anything that needs my review". Whatever route you use, read the final slides and not only the outline. Our step-by-step guide to creating a presentation with AI covers structure and design in more depth.

ChatGPT Slides vs Claude Slides

Claude Slides is available on every Claude plan, including Free, while ChatGPT Slides needs Pro, Business or Enterprise. That is the biggest difference between the two slide builders.

Anthropic launched Claude Slides on 16 September 2026, in beta on paid plans. Anthropic's 8 October announcement then said "Claude Docs, Slides, and Design are out of beta and available on every plan, including Free." ChatGPT Slides arrived eight days later, and only for plans with Space.

ChatGPT's advantage is the team workflow: live co-editing, shared comments and an @mention that hands an edit to ChatGPT. Anthropic's help center lists PowerPoint and PDF as Claude's deck exports, where ChatGPT Slides adds Google Slides on the web. If you build decks alone, Claude gives you a slide editor without a $100 plan. Our Claude Slides guide walks through the Claude side step by step.

Make a PowerPoint Without a Pro Plan, With Fello AI

If you just want the finished deck, you don't need a $100 ChatGPT plan or a team workspace. In Fello AI, you ask for the deck and get a PowerPoint file. Its PowerPoint skill creates and edits presentations and hands you a downloadable .pptx that opens in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides.

You also don't have to pick between ChatGPT and Claude to do it. Fello AI puts GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and more in one app. Draft the storyline with one model, then ask another to check the numbers before they go on a slide. Upload the report or PDF the deck should come from, and ask for changes the same way you would in ChatGPT.

Fello AI runs natively on Mac, iPhone and iPad, with a free tier, 4.7 stars and more than 27,000 reviews. The full version costs from $11.99 a month in most countries, as of October 2026.

The Verdict

ChatGPT can make a PowerPoint on any plan, so the decision is about where you want the deck to live. If you already work in PowerPoint, install the add-in and stop there: every plan gets it, and the slides stay native. If you pay for Plus, use ChatGPT Work for full files and native Google Slides. Only buy Pro for ChatGPT Slides if several people edit the same deck every week, because real-time co-editing is the one thing the cheaper routes cannot do. For a solo deck, the add-in on your current plan or Claude Slides on Claude's Free plan gets you there without a $100 bill.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT make a PowerPoint for free?

Yes. The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in is available on the Free plan with limited usage. It runs inside Microsoft PowerPoint and builds editable slides from your prompt. Free also gets limited ChatGPT Work access in the desktop app, but not ChatGPT Slides.

Is ChatGPT Slides available on ChatGPT Plus?

No. ChatGPT Slides is available on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans with Space access, and OpenAI's pricing page lists Space as unavailable on Plus. Plus users can make decks with ChatGPT Work or the PowerPoint add-in instead.

Why don't I see Slides in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT Slides started rolling out on 16 October 2026, so it may not have reached your account yet even on an eligible plan. You also need Space access, which Free, Go and Plus do not include. On Windows without OpenAI's MXC component, the desktop app uses .pptx files instead.

Can I export ChatGPT Slides to Google Slides or Keynote?

On the web, ChatGPT Slides exports to PowerPoint, PDF and Google Slides. In the desktop app, you can open the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote if either app is installed on your computer.

Can ChatGPT edit an existing PowerPoint?

Yes. The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in can add or revise slides in a deck you already have open, and it can review the deck's story and structure. OpenAI recommends duplicating important files first, because edits can delete content.
