Anthropic announced Personal Finance in Claude on 5 November 2026. Claude Personal Finance connects your bank, card, loan and investment accounts through Plaid, reads up to 24 months of transactions, and answers questions about your money in plain language. Access is read-only. It is a beta on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US only, rolling out gradually from that week.

This guide covers both ways to use Claude for personal finance. The first is the new feature: how to switch it on, on a Mac and on an iPhone, what Claude can and cannot see, and the prompts worth asking. The second is the route for everyone the beta leaves out, including Free users and anyone outside the US, which works from a bank export instead of a live connection. Along the way we flag the privacy details buried in Anthropic's help article, and we compare Claude with ChatGPT's own Finances feature.

The Key Takeaways

  • Who gets it: Claude Personal Finance is a US-only beta on Pro, Max and Ultra. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Free, Team and Enterprise accounts do not get it.
  • What it reads: bank and account names, usually the last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to 24 months of transactions. It cannot move, manage or invest money, and it does not read investment holdings.
  • Training: chats inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic's models. Money questions asked in a normal chat follow your usual privacy settings.
  • The trap: an artifact made from your bank data shows its figures to everyone who opens it, and a shared chat link shows them too.
  • Versus ChatGPT: ChatGPT's Finances is on every US plan, including Free, and adds investment holdings and an Experian credit score. Claude's works in the Claude Desktop app on Mac, which ChatGPT does not list for Finances.

Claude Personal Finance is a dashboard and chat mode inside Claude that reads your real bank and card accounts and answers money questions from your own numbers. You link accounts through Plaid, a service that connects apps to banks, and Claude never sees your bank password. Anthropic's announcement is blunt about the limits: "Access is read-only, and Personal Finance can’t move, manage, or invest your money."

The Personal Finance page is built from widgets. According to Anthropic's help article, they show your spending, cash flow, accounts, subscriptions, upcoming bills and short insights from Claude, and you can add, edit, remove and reorder them. Below the widgets sits a question box. You can also ask the same questions in an ordinary Claude chat.

Anthropic's own launch example shows the intended use. A user asks "Where did my money go this month?" Claude adds up spending across the linked accounts and sorts it by category. In Anthropic's example the total is $4,309.37, with more than half on rent and utilities and $1,024.51 on food and drink. Follow-up questions find a membership renewal and four payments due before payday, leaving $1,393.22. Those are Anthropic's illustrative figures, not a test of ours.

Anthropic announced the beta on its official account on 5 November:

TechCrunch framed the launch as Anthropic answering a feature ChatGPT already had:

Who Can Use Claude Personal Finance?

Claude Personal Finance is available only to paid personal accounts in the United States. The Use Personal Finance in Claude help article lists Pro, Max and Ultra. It says the feature "isn’t available on Free, Team, or Enterprise plans." You can link US banks only. Outside the US, or on a VPN that connects from another country, the Personal Finance entry does not appear at all.

Personal Finance costs nothing extra on top of the plan. The cheapest way in is Pro, which is the same price as ChatGPT Plus. Our full Claude pricing guide covers what else each tier includes. Prices are from claude.com/pricing on 6 November 2026.

The rollout is gradual. Anthropic's help article says "you might not see it yet" even on an eligible plan, so a missing menu item on day one is not a fault on your side.

How to Set Up Claude Personal Finance

Setup takes seven steps, and the flow is the same on the web, Claude Desktop and the mobile apps. Anthropic's help article gives this order:

  1. Open Claude on the web, in Claude Desktop, or in the iPhone or Android app.
  2. Open Personal Finance in the side menu. If it is not listed, hover over More.
  3. Select Get started, then choose your goals or skip them, and select Continue.
  4. Select Link accounts with Plaid, review what Claude will be able to read on the Connect Plaid to Claude screen, and select Continue.
  5. In Plaid, choose your bank, sign in, and tick the accounts you want to share.
  6. Return to Claude and wait for the accounts to appear. Transactions can take a few minutes to sync.
  7. Select Link another account for a second bank, or Done.

Two limits matter before you start. Plaid has to be finished within 10 minutes, and you should go straight back to Claude afterwards. You can link up to 16 banks. To add an account at a bank you already linked, link that bank again and share every account you want Claude to read, not only the new one.

Setting It Up on a Mac

On a Mac, the Claude Desktop app supports Personal Finance, but Plaid does not open inside it. Claude Desktop sends Plaid to your default browser, and that browser has to be signed in to Claude with the same account. If the link fails, Anthropic's advice is to finish in the browser Claude opened and not to reload Plaid's page.

Setting It Up on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, Plaid opens inside the Claude app, so you never leave it while linking a bank. On Android it opens in a browser tab. In both mobile apps, extra banks are added from the gear icon in the top right of the Personal Finance page, not from a button at the top.

If Personal Finance Is Missing

A missing Personal Finance entry has four usual causes, according to Anthropic's troubleshooting table. They are the plan, a Team or Enterprise account instead of a personal one, an out-of-date app, and a connection from outside the US. The fifth is the rollout itself, which has not reached every account yet. If you are on Pro or above, in the US, on your personal account and on the latest app, the only fix is to wait. If you are on the Free plan, our guide to Claude's Free plan shows what it does include.

What Claude Personal Finance Can and Can't See

Personal Finance reads four kinds of data from the accounts you share, and nothing from the accounts you leave unticked in Plaid. Anthropic's help article lists them: bank names, account names, types and last four digits, balances and credit limits, and up to 24 months of transactions. Each transaction carries the amount, date, merchant, category and your bank's own description.

Claude does not read investment holdings, trades, interest rates or loan terms. For investment, loan and card accounts it sees balances and credit limits only, even if Plaid's consent screen asks about investment or loan data. That makes it a spending tool, not a portfolio tool.

Two caveats from the same article are easy to miss. First, Claude normally gets only the last four digits of an account number. If your bank writes the full number into an account name or a transaction description, though, Claude sees it there. Second, balances may lag by a day or two, so a figure may differ from your banking app.

Claude cannot act on any of it. Personal Finance cannot move money, pay a bill, change an account or invest. Anthropic says it "isn't designed to give investment advice." There are no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Personal Finance offers no credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own.

Best Questions and Prompts for Claude Personal Finance

The best prompts are specific questions about a time window, a category or a decision, followed by a request to list the transactions behind the answer. Claude can make mistakes, and Anthropic's own advice is to ask which transactions sit behind a number and to check important figures against your bank. Every prompt below works in the Personal Finance hub once your accounts are linked.

Prompts for Spending and Bills

Spending prompts work best when they name a time window and ask for the transactions behind the total.

Where did my money go last month? Group it by category, show the top five merchants, and list the transactions behind the biggest category.
Which subscriptions am I paying for? Include the amount, how often each one charges, and the last date it charged.
Look across every linked account for anything that looks off: charges that hit twice, fees I did not expect, or a bill that has gone up over the last 12 months.
What payments will come out of my checking account before the 1st, and what will I have left?

Prompts for Planning and Dashboards

Planning prompts turn the same transactions into a comparison, an explanation or a chart.

Am I spending more than I earn? Compare income and spending for each of the last six months in a table.
What is an APR, and how much interest have my credit cards cost me this year? Show the transactions you counted.
Build me a weekly spending chart and a calendar of bills due this month that I can keep adjusting.

Charts, calendars and dashboards are among the launch features Anthropic lists. A chart made from your accounts carries real figures, so check who can open it before you share it.

Claude Personal Finance Privacy: Six Details to Know

Claude keeps Personal Finance hub conversations out of model training, but six other rules in Anthropic's help article decide where your figures end up. They are not in the launch post.

Where Your Figures Can Travel

Your figures can leave the hub through training settings, artifacts and shared links.

  1. Training depends on where you ask. Chats inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic's models. The same question asked in an ordinary chat follows your normal privacy settings. Our guide on how to stop AI from training on your data shows where that setting lives.
  2. Artifacts show real numbers to anyone who opens them. Claude asks before it publishes an artifact from a chat that used your accounts. Once published, any figures in it are visible to everyone who opens it, and it stays until you delete it, even if you delete the chat.
  3. Artifacts read the viewer's accounts. An artifact can read the linked accounts of whoever opens it, if that person has Personal Finance and allows Plaid.
  4. Shared links include the figures. A shared chat link shows your messages, Claude's replies and any numbers from your accounts.

What Claude Keeps and What It Deletes

Personal Finance treats memory and unlinking differently from the rest of Claude.

  1. Finance chats stay out of memory. Once Claude has used your accounts in a chat, it is designed not to save that chat to memory or search it later. It also leaves the chat out of your monthly recap. See how Claude's memory works for everything else.
  2. Unlinking the last bank wipes the dashboard. Your widgets, budgets and setup answers are deleted, and that cannot be undone. Unlinking a bank also removes every account at that bank, because you cannot unlink a single account.

Three more account rules follow from the same article. When a paid plan ends, you can no longer open Personal Finance and Claude stops reading your accounts in chats, but your banks stay linked until you unlink them. Moving a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization unlinks your banks. And you can always revoke access from Plaid's side at my.plaid.com.

Claude Personal Finance vs ChatGPT Finances

ChatGPT Finances is the cheaper and broader tool, and Claude's version is the more private one by default. OpenAI launched its version in May 2026 and has since opened it to every US consumer plan. Both use Plaid, both are US-only, and neither can move money. Our ChatGPT Personal Finance review covers OpenAI's side in depth.

The ChatGPT column comes from OpenAI's Finances in ChatGPT help article. OpenAI lists web, iOS and Android for Finances, not the ChatGPT Mac app, so a Mac user who wants a native app gets it only on the Claude side.

Pick ChatGPT Finances if you want it free, if you hold investments you want analyzed, or if you want your credit score in the same place. Pick Claude's version if you already pay for Claude, work on a Mac, or want a written promise that hub conversations stay out of training without changing a setting.

How to Use Claude for Personal Finance Without Linking a Bank

You can use Claude for personal finance on any plan, in any country, by giving it a bank export instead of a live connection. Most banks offer transactions as a CSV file or a statement as a PDF. Upload the file to a Claude chat, or paste the rows, and ask the same questions. Claude reads only what you hand it, and nothing updates on its own.

I've attached three months of my bank transactions as a CSV. Group spending by category, flag any subscriptions and duplicate charges, and build a simple monthly budget in a table. Tell me which rows you could not categorize.

The export route has one advantage. A chat that used linked accounts, the help article says, "may not be able to run code or work with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF files." A chat built from an uploaded file has no such limit, so it is the better place for a real spreadsheet. Linked accounts also cannot be used in Cowork, scheduled tasks or Claude Code, and may not work in a project, so anything automated still needs the export.

Before you upload, delete columns you do not need, such as full account numbers. An exported file is shared on the same privacy terms as any other chat.

Ask Claude and ChatGPT About the Same Statement

If you would rather not link a bank to any AI company, you do not have to pick one model to trust with the statement. Drop the PDF or spreadsheet into Fello AI, ask Claude where the money went, then ask ChatGPT or Gemini the same question in the same window to check the totals. Fello AI is a native app for Mac, iPhone and iPad with more than 20 models behind one subscription, and nothing connects to your bank.

Is Claude Personal Finance Worth It?

Claude Personal Finance is worth switching on if you already pay for Claude Pro or above and live in the US. It costs nothing extra, it reads only what you tick in Plaid, and hub chats stay out of training. It is not worth upgrading from the Free plan for, because ChatGPT gives US users the same Plaid connection plus investments and a credit score for $0. Outside the US, or if linking a bank is a line you will not cross, uploading a bank export gives Claude the same questions to answer with less to lose. Whichever you choose, keep artifacts and shared links away from anything built on your real accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Personal Finance free?

No. Personal Finance in Claude is a beta on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Free, Team and Enterprise accounts do not get it, though anyone can upload a bank export to a normal Claude chat.

Is Claude Personal Finance safe?

Mostly, yes. Personal Finance in Claude is read-only and connects through Plaid, so Claude never sees your bank password and cannot move money. Hub chats are not used for training. The real risks are artifacts and shared links, which show your figures to anyone who opens them.

Does Claude Personal Finance work outside the US?

No. Personal Finance links US banks only, and the menu item does not appear outside the US or on a VPN connecting from another country. Linked banks stay linked while you travel and come back when you return.

Can Claude see my investments?

Only the balances. Personal Finance reads balances and credit limits for investment, loan and card accounts, not holdings, trades, rates or loan terms. ChatGPT Finances does read investment holdings.

How do I disconnect my bank from Claude?

Open Personal Finance, choose Manage linked accounts from the three-dot menu (the gear icon on mobile), and select Unlink on the bank. You can also disconnect Claude at my.plaid.com. Unlinking your last bank deletes the dashboard and its budgets.
