Apple’s own promotional footnotes state that the advertised iPhone 17 price “includes $30 connectivity discount” on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Buy it unlocked and outright and you pay more than the headline. It is a small difference, and it is the kind of small difference that turns a budget decision into an annoyed one at checkout.

Storage Is Where the Money Goes

Moving from 256GB to 512GB costs $200 across the line. On the Pro Max the 2TB tier reaches $1,999, which is $400 above the 1TB version for storage most people will never fill. If you shoot a lot of ProRes video, pay it. Otherwise the base tier plus iCloud is the cheaper answer by a wide margin.

Both Pro models come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The iPhone 18 Pro runs $1,199, $1,399, $1,799 and $2,399; the Pro Max adds $100 at every tier. New this year is a burgundy finish alongside black, silver and a new glacier.

Why There Is No Standard iPhone 18 This Autumn

Pegatron, which assembles iPhones for Apple, pointed to a split launch at its 12 August earnings conference. Taiwan’s United Daily News reported it first, and AppleInsider’s write-up of the delayed base model carried it in English. The reported cause is a component crunch: memory and custom silicon are tight, so Apple is steering supply toward the higher-margin Pro models first.

Apple has confirmed none of this. Treat it as a supplier signal rather than a company statement, and note that it lines up with everything analysts are saying about memory pricing.

iPhone 18 Pre-Order and Release Date: We Called It

Apple never announces pre-order dates before the keynote, but it follows a pattern you can set a calendar by. We published the two dates below before the event, breaking the usual Friday habit for a specific reason, and Apple confirmed both exactly: pre-orders open Saturday 12 September at 5 a.m. Pacific, with availability on Friday 18 September. The reasoning is kept below because it is the part that transfers to next year.

Five Years of Launch Dates

Every row is now a matter of record. The last one was a forecast when we published it, and the reason it breaks the Friday habit is worth keeping.

Why the Friday Slot Moves This Year

Counting forward from a 9 September keynote puts pre-orders on Friday 11 September 2026, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 2001 attacks. Apple has met this collision once before. In 2015 the keynote also fell on Wednesday 9 September, and as MacRumors notes in its pre-order timing analysis, iPhone 6s pre-orders opened on Saturday 12 September rather than the Friday.

Apple did exactly that again. Pre-orders opened on Saturday 12 September and phones reach buyers on Friday 18 September. The 2015 precedent held.

How Much the iPhone 18 Pro Costs, and Why the Forecasts Missed

Apple has now published the numbers: $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max. That is a $100 rise over the iPhone 17 Pro, and it is well below what the analysts expected. Their reasoning is left below, because being wrong in a specific direction is useful information about next year.

What the Analysts Were Quoting

On 25 June 2026, IDC’s Nabila Popal suggested a rise of “perhaps even $200 to the Pro/Pro Max models.” On 31 July, Jeff Pu of GF Securities went further and put the increase at $250 to $300. He blamed higher 2nm silicon costs alongside DRAM and NAND pricing, both squeezed by the global build-out of AI data centres. Pu downgraded Apple stock from buy to hold on the back of it.

Applied to the iPhone 17 Pro’s $1,099, that pointed at $1,299 to $1,399. Apple came in at $1,199, so it absorbed most of the increase rather than passing it on. Both estimates were directionally right about costs rising and roughly $200 too high about the consequence. If you budgeted $1,400 on our advice, you have change.

The Foldable Is a Separate Budget

The reporting was close. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had the foldable above $2,000, with Touch ID rather than Face ID and no telephoto camera. Apple shipped it at $1,999, just under the line, and the Touch ID and telephoto calls were both right: the iPhone Duo authenticates with a side-button Touch ID and its 2x is a crop of the main sensor rather than a dedicated lens. Only the name was wrong. That is still a first-generation product at a first-generation price. Fascinating machine, poor default recommendation.

What Is New in the iPhone 18 Pro

This section was written from supply-chain analysts, chiefly Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu. Apple has now confirmed the line-up, so each item below is marked with what it turned out to be. Two of the three were right and one was wrong.

The A20 Pro Chip

The headline change is a move to a 2nm process. Analyst estimates put the A20 Pro at roughly 15% faster than the current A19 generation with about 30% better power efficiency, using a new wafer-level packaging technique. For on-device AI that second number matters more, because local models are limited by thermal headroom and memory bandwidth rather than by peak clocks.

Confirmed, and the AI number was bigger than anyone forecast. The A20 Pro is 2nm with a 6-core CPU Apple calls up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster, and 50% more memory bandwidth. The part the analysts missed is the Dual 16-core Neural Engine, 32 cores in total, which Apple says doubles the AI processing power of the A19 Pro. The packaging story was right too: Apple moved memory out of the chip’s thermal path and bonded the die to a vapor chamber with three times the surface area, which is what makes the thermal headroom argument above hold up in practice.

Cameras and Connectivity

Kuo expected a mechanical variable aperture on the main camera, a first for iPhone and something Huawei and Samsung shipped years ago. It lets the phone stop down in daylight and open up at night rather than faking the difference in software.

Confirmed. The 48MP Fusion Main camera uses six laser-cut blades to move between f/1.48 and f/4, and Apple exposes manual control over four aperture settings in a new Pro controls interface, plus an API for developers. It is exclusive to the two Pro models. The iPhone Duo does not get it.

Connectivity splits in two. Reports pointed to Apple’s own C2 modem in most markets and a Qualcomm part with mmWave for buyers in the United States.

Wrong on the Qualcomm half. Apple shipped its own C2 everywhere, and it supports mmWave in the US itself. Apple says C2 uploads meaningfully faster than the C1X while using 15% less energy, and describes its cellular improvements as AI-powered.

The Face ID Question

Under-display Face ID had been reported, denied and re-reported for over a year. Some leakers had it shrinking the Dynamic Island this year, others said the full implementation slips to 2027.

Half right. The Dynamic Island did shrink, and Apple redesigned it to show up to three Live Activities at once, but it is still there and it still houses Face ID. There is no under-display Face ID on the iPhone 18 Pro. The one model that drops Face ID entirely is the foldable, which uses Touch ID in the side button instead.

Do You Need a New iPhone for the AI?

This is where the marketing and Apple’s own documentation quietly diverge. Every new iPhone is sold as the one that is finally ready for Apple’s AI. The published requirements say otherwise.

Siri AI Runs on Phones You Already Own

Apple’s announcement of the rebuilt assistant lists the hardware plainly: iPhone 16 models or later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple has now dated it: Siri AI arrives on 14 September as a beta, in English only, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. Read that device list again. The EU Exception

One line in Apple’s announcement matters more than any spec: “Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.” The 9 September press materials repeat it word for word, and add that features relying on Siri AI are excluded in the EU as well. Nothing about the new hardware changes it.
