The best Claude Code alternatives in 2026 are OpenCode, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot CLI. OpenCode is the free, open source agent that runs almost any model. Codex comes with ChatGPT Plus, Cursor puts the editor first, and Copilot CLI is already on many teams' bills. Aider, Cline and Kilo Code cover the bring-your-own-model crowd, while Google's Antigravity CLI and SpaceXSI's Grok Build both have a free way in.
Most people search for a Claude Code alternative right after a usage limit stops them in the middle of a task, or after the bill for Max arrives. The fix is not always a new tool. Some of the options below are already included in a plan you pay for. One lets you keep Claude Code and swap only the model. And one rule catches almost everyone: your Claude subscription does not work inside other coding tools. Every price and plan detail here was checked on the vendors' own pages and GitHub repositories on 1 November 2026. We did not benchmark the tools, so you will not find invented scores here.
The Key Takeaways
- Claude Code has no free plan: it starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month and shares one usage pool with your Claude chats.
- The best free option is OpenCode: MIT licensed, over 220,000 GitHub stars, and it connects to 75+ model providers, local models included.
- You may already own one: ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, every Copilot plan includes Copilot CLI, and the $8 X Subscription Plus includes Grok Build.
- Your Claude plan stays home: Anthropic reserves Pro, Max and Ultra sign-in for its own apps, so Claude models in other tools cost API rates.
- Gemini CLI is no longer the free pick: Google moved free and AI Pro users to Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026.
The Best Claude Code Alternatives at a Glance
Nine Claude Code alternatives are worth a look in November 2026. They split into three camps: open source agents you pair with any model, agents from the big labs that come with a subscription, and editors with an agent built in. The table shows where each one runs and the cheapest way to start.

Why Developers Look for a Claude Code Alternative
Developers look for a Claude Code alternative for four reasons: usage limits, price, being tied to one model family, and closed source. Each reason points to a different tool, so it is worth naming yours before you install anything.
Usage Limits and Price
Claude Code is included in Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), Max at $100 and Ultra at $200, according to Anthropic's pricing page. The Free plan does not include it. Anthropic also says that your activity in Claude on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code "all draws from the same pool". Most plans reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits. When you hit the wall, you wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates. Our Claude Code pricing breakdown covers what each tier buys.
One Model Family and Closed Source
Claude Code runs Anthropic's models only. Its own documentation says Anthropic "doesn't support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through any gateway". The Claude Code repository on GitHub carries no open source licence either, so you cannot fork the harness or audit it the way you can audit OpenCode or Cline. If you want GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or a model on your own Mac, Claude Code is the wrong tool by design.
Check the Subscription You Already Pay For
The cheapest Claude Code alternative is often one you already pay for. Five common subscriptions now include a terminal coding agent, so check this list before you buy anything new.
| If you pay for | You already have | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Codex: desktop app only on Free and Go; CLI, IDE extension and web from Plus; expanded on Pro | Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 |
| GitHub Copilot | Copilot CLI, included in every Copilot plan | Free; Pro $10 with 1,500 AI credits; Pro+ $39 with 7,000 |
| The X Subscription | Grok Build, plus Cursor with Grok models | Plus $8, Premium $30 |
| Google AI Pro or Ultra | Antigravity CLI with higher limits than the free tier | Antigravity itself is free to start |
| A Kimi membership | Kimi Code, from the Plus tier up | See our Kimi pricing guide |
OpenCode accepts several of these logins directly. Its documentation lists ChatGPT Plus and GitHub Copilot as subscriptions you can use "with zero setup". It also has a separate sign-in for a SuperGrok subscription, so one open source tool can run on a plan you already have.
Your Claude Subscription Does Not Work in Other Tools
A Claude Pro, Max or Ultra subscription only powers Anthropic's own apps, so using Claude models in OpenCode, Cline or Aider means paying API rates. Anthropic's legal and compliance page for Claude Code says subscription sign-in "is designed to support ordinary use of Claude Code and other native Anthropic applications". The same page says Anthropic "does not permit third-party developers" to route requests through Free, Pro, Max or Ultra plan credentials.
OpenCode's provider documentation is just as direct. It tells you to create an API key in the Anthropic Console. It also notes that plugins exist to use Claude Pro or Max models in OpenCode, adding: "Anthropic explicitly prohibits this." The practical consequence is simple. If you leave Claude Code because of cost but still want Claude models, per-token billing can cost more than the $20 plan you left. Leaving makes the most sense when you also leave the model.
Open Source Claude Code Alternatives
The four open source Claude Code alternatives worth installing are OpenCode, Aider, Cline and Kilo Code. All four are free software. You pay only for the model tokens you use, or nothing at all with a local model running through Ollama or LM Studio.
OpenCode: The Closest Open Source Match
OpenCode is the open source agent most like Claude Code. It runs as a terminal interface, a desktop app and an IDE extension. It connects to 75+ providers through Models.dev, local models included, and runs several agents in parallel on one project. Its GitHub repository lists the MIT licence and had more than 220,000 stars on 1 November 2026. OpenCode ships with a set of free models you can use without an account. For a flat bill, OpenCode Go costs $10 a month and Go Plus $40. Both cover a curated list of coding models that includes Kimi K3.1 Pro, MiniMax, GLM, Qwen, DeepSeek, GPT 6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5.
Aider: Git-First, but Slow-Moving
Aider is a terminal pair programmer that commits every change to git with a sensible commit message. You diff and undo AI edits with the git tools you already know. It connects to almost any LLM, local models included, and installs with python -m pip install aider-install. One caution before you build a workflow on it. Aider's latest release on PyPI is 0.86.2 from 12 February 2026, and its most recent GitHub commit is from 22 May 2026. It still works, but it moves far slower than the other tools in this list.
Cline: The Approval-First Option
Cline is an Apache 2.0 agent with about 71,000 GitHub stars that runs in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, a CLI and a desktop app for macOS and Windows. Its README says "every file edit and terminal command requires your approval", which makes it the cautious choice, and you can switch on auto-approve once you trust a task. A Plan mode explores the codebase and proposes a strategy, and Act mode carries it out. Cline works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, AWS Bedrock, Azure, Vertex, Groq, Cerebras and local models through Ollama or LM Studio.
Kilo Code: 500 Models, No Markup
Kilo Code is an MIT licensed agent for VS Code, JetBrains and the terminal, with about 27,800 GitHub stars. Its README promises access to 500+ models, switching between them in the middle of a task, and the provider's rate "with zero markup". That makes Kilo Code a good fit if you want a cheap model for exploring a codebase and a stronger one for the final change.
Claude Code Alternatives From OpenAI, Google, xAI and GitHub
The big labs each ship their own Claude Code alternative, and each one is tied to its maker's models and subscription. Pick the one whose subscription you already have, or whose free tier fits your workload.
Codex: For ChatGPT Subscribers
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, with an Apache 2.0 CLI that has more than 130,000 GitHub stars, an IDE extension, a desktop app and a cloud version on the web. On a Mac it installs with curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh. OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists limited Codex access on ChatGPT Free and Go ($8), but only in the desktop app. The CLI, the IDE extension and Codex on the web start with Plus ($20), and Pro (from $100) expands the usage. If you already pay for Plus, trying Codex costs nothing extra.
Antigravity CLI: Google's Replacement for Gemini CLI
Antigravity CLI is Google's terminal agent, and it replaced Gemini CLI for individual users. Google's transition post says Gemini CLI stopped serving free users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on 18 June 2026. Gemini CLI still works with paid Gemini API keys and enterprise Code Assist licences. Antigravity CLI is written in Go, shares its agent harness with the Antigravity desktop app, and keeps skills, hooks and subagents. The free Antigravity plan comes with "basic weekly rate limits". Comparison pages written before June still describe Gemini CLI as the generous free option, so check the date on anything you read. More background is in our guide to Google Antigravity.
Grok Build: Open Source, From $8
Grok Build is SpaceXSI's terminal coding agent, open source under Apache 2.0 with about 27,600 GitHub stars. It installs with curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash, is "available to try for free", and has a plan mode that blocks every edit until you approve the plan. The X Subscription Plus plan at $8 a month includes Grok Build alongside Grok chat and Cursor. Our Grok Build install guide walks through the Mac setup step by step.
GitHub Copilot CLI: Already on Your Team's Bill
GitHub Copilot CLI is the easiest Claude Code alternative to get approved at work if your company already pays for Copilot, because GitHub's plans documentation says "all plans include Copilot CLI". Individual plans are Copilot Free, Pro at $10 a month with 1,500 AI credits, Pro+ at $39 with 7,000 credits, and Max at $100. The procurement work is already done.
Cursor: The Editor-First Alternative
Cursor is the Claude Code alternative for developers who want AI inside the editor first and the terminal second. Since 12 October 2026, new Cursor customers buy it through The X Subscription: Free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 a month. Plus runs Grok models only. On Cursor's pricing page, third-party models such as Claude, GPT and Gemini start at Premium and are "billed separately by usage" at API list price. The plan price is not your whole bill if you want Claude in Cursor. For a head-to-head, see our Cursor vs Claude Code comparison.
One date matters for anyone choosing Cursor for GPT models. OpenAI has proposed ending its contract to supply models to Cursor on 12 November 2026, after SpaceX bought the company. What still works after that date, and how to run Codex inside Cursor instead, is in our Codex vs Cursor comparison.
Keep Claude Code and Change the Model
If you like Claude Code itself and only object to the price, two Chinese model makers sell coding plans that plug into Claude Code directly. Anthropic does not support this setup, so treat it as unofficial, but both vendors document it.
The GLM Coding Plan from Z.ai starts at $18 a month. Z.ai's documentation says it works with 20+ agent tools, including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Cline, runs GLM-5.3, and is metered with a five-hour and a weekly credit limit. Our GLM pricing guide lists the higher Pro and Max tiers. Kimi Code from Moonshot AI comes with a Kimi membership from the Plus tier up. Kimi's documentation says it shares the membership quota and works in Claude Code, OpenCode and Codex as well as Moonshot's own CLI.
The trade-off is model quality and trust, not convenience. You keep Claude Code's skills, hooks and permission system, but the model behind it is no longer Claude, and your code goes to a different provider.
Claude Code Alternatives on a Mac
Every tool in this list runs on macOS, but Mac developers have one option the roundups miss: Xcode now has coding agents built in. Apple announced agentic coding in Xcode 26.3 in February 2026, with Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex available inside the IDE. Agents in Xcode can search documentation, change project settings, build the app and check their work through Xcode Previews.
Apple's setup guide puts all of this under Xcode, Settings, Intelligence. ChatGPT in Xcode works with a free ChatGPT account. You add any agent that supports the Agent Client Protocol by hand. Xcode also makes its capabilities available through the Model Context Protocol, so an agent you run outside Xcode works with your project too. For Swift and SwiftUI work, try Codex inside Xcode before you install anything else.
For the Questions That Do Not Need an Agent
Plenty of coding questions do not need an agent with write access to your repository. You want to know why an error happens, which library to use, or whether GPT agrees with Claude's explanation. You do not have to pick a side for that. Fello AI lets you ask the same question to Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Kimi in one window, without a second subscription. It runs on your Mac, iPhone and iPad.
Which Claude Code Alternative Should You Pick?
OpenCode is the right first install for most developers, and the rest of the list wins on a specific reason for leaving. Match yours in the table.
| Your reason | Your pick |
|---|---|
| You want free and open source | OpenCode first, then Cline or Kilo Code if you prefer working in an editor |
| You want to keep your spending flat | Codex if you pay for ChatGPT Plus, Copilot CLI if you pay for Copilot, Grok Build if you pay for The X Subscription |
| You want an editor, not a terminal | Cursor, Cline or Kilo Code |
| You want maximum model choice | OpenCode, Kilo Code or Cline |
| You build Apple apps | Codex inside Xcode |
| You like Claude Code but not its price | The GLM Coding Plan or Kimi Code inside Claude Code, accepting that Anthropic does not support it |
| You want a free Google option | Antigravity CLI, after reading its weekly limits |
Want a free model rather than a new tool? Our list of the best free AI models for coding pairs well with OpenCode, Cline, Kilo Code or Aider.
The Verdict: Switch for the Model, Not Only for the Price
The strongest reason to leave Claude Code is wanting a different model or open source code, and OpenCode answers both for free. The weakest reason is the price alone. Your Claude subscription does not follow you, and heavy use of Claude models at API rates in another tool can cost more than Pro. For most developers the smart move is two tools: keep Claude Code for long, multi-file jobs, and add OpenCode or the agent your existing subscription already includes for everything else. Before you rebuild your setup, read whether Claude Code is free to use. The cheapest coding agent is often one you already pay for.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to Claude Code?
OpenCode is the best Claude Code alternative for most people. It is free, MIT licensed, runs in the terminal, a desktop app or your IDE, and connects to 75+ model providers. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, Codex costs nothing extra, and if you want an editor, Cursor is the leading choice.
Is there a free alternative to Claude Code?
Yes. OpenCode, Aider, Cline and Kilo Code are free open source tools, and you pay only for model tokens, or nothing with a local model. Codex runs in the desktop app on ChatGPT Free, Copilot Free includes Copilot CLI, and Antigravity CLI and Grok Build both have a free tier with limits.
Can I use my Claude Pro or Max subscription in OpenCode or Cursor?
No. Anthropic says subscription sign-in is for Claude Code and its own apps, and it does not permit third-party tools to route requests through Pro, Max or Ultra credentials. To use Claude models in OpenCode or Cline you need an Anthropic API key, and in Cursor Claude is billed at API list price from the Premium plan.
Is Gemini CLI still free?
Not for individuals. Google moved free users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers from Gemini CLI to Antigravity CLI on 18 June 2026. Gemini CLI still works with a paid Gemini API key or an enterprise Code Assist licence, and Antigravity CLI has a free plan with basic weekly limits.
What is the cheapest way to get a Claude Code style agent?
The cheapest way is a tool included in a plan you already pay for. That means Codex with ChatGPT Plus, Copilot CLI with Copilot, or Grok Build with the $8 X Subscription Plus. Without any subscription, OpenCode with its free models, or with a local model on your Mac, costs nothing.
