NotebookLM pricing in 2026 spans six SKUs tied to Google AI subscriptions: Standard at $0/month, Plus at $4.99/month via Google AI Plus, Pro at $19.99/month via Google AI Pro, Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99/month via the two Google AI Ultra tiers, Workspace Business Standard at $14/user/month, and NotebookLM Enterprise at $9/license/month. Since September 2, 2026, the consumer plans no longer count usage per day: your allowance refreshes every five hours up to a weekly limit, and each paid plan multiplies the free one. Consumers cannot buy NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, as a standalone product.

This guide breaks down what every NotebookLM tier costs in 2026 after Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash launch at I/O 2026 and the AI Ultra price reshuffle on May 19. Google has since renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. The prices did not change with the rename, but the usage limits changed on September 2. For a full walkthrough of the actual product, see our step-by-step NotebookLM guide or our explainer on what is NotebookLM. We cover the new five-hour usage limits, notebook and source caps, watermark removal, the 20TB and 30TB Ultra plans, the student free year, plus where Workspace and Enterprise pricing fits in. Most older posts still call the paid plan “NotebookLM Plus = $19.99,” which is now wrong; we lay out the correct mapping below so you don’t overpay.

NotebookLM is not your only option for spoken audio, and our roundup of the best AI podcast generators shows how it stacks up against dedicated podcast tools.

The Key Takeaways

  • NotebookLM Standard is free with 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook and a usage allowance that refreshes every five hours up to a weekly limit. No card, no trial.
  • NotebookLM Plus is bundled with Google AI Plus at $4.99/month and doubles the notebooks, the sources and the usage allowance.
  • NotebookLM Pro ships with Google AI Pro at $19.99/month with four times the free allowance and watermark-free outputs; this is the tier most paid users actually want.
  • NotebookLM Ultra now lives inside two Google AI Ultra tiers: $99.99/month (20TB plan, 5x the Pro allowance, 500 sources/notebook) or $199.99/month (30TB plan, 20x the Pro allowance, 600 sources/notebook).
  • The student free year is back. Google relaunched it on August 19, 2026: eligible US college students get 12 months of AI Pro, which is NotebookLM Pro, and students in 140+ other markets get 12 months of AI Plus, which is NotebookLM Plus. Redeem by December 31, 2026; you must be 18+ and verify through SheerID.

Yes, NotebookLM is free. The Standard tier costs $0/month, works with any Google account, and comes with no trial, no credit card and no time limit. The free plan gives you 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook. Chats, Audio and Video Overviews, reports and Deep Research all draw on one compute-based allowance that Google calls “Standard limits”. It refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit, and Google no longer publishes a fixed daily count. Most features are on the free tier, including Audio and Video Overviews, Deep Research and Slide Decks, though watermark removal starts at Pro and Deep Research and Slide Decks are for users 18 and older. Our dedicated guide to whether NotebookLM is free walks through what that allowance means day to day.

NotebookLM is free because Google bundles it with your Google account to drive adoption of its Gemini models, the same way free Gmail and Google Docs pull people into the wider ecosystem. You start paying when you want a bigger usage allowance, more notebooks and sources, or watermark-free outputs. As a consumer, you cannot buy NotebookLM as a standalone product.

NotebookLM Free vs Plus

The catch with the free version is volume, not missing features. Google weighs prompt complexity, chat length, the number of sources and the features you use, so a session of Audio Overviews or Deep Research uses the allowance up faster than plain chat. Students can use the free Standard tier with no verification at all, and since August 19, 2026 they can also get Plus or Pro free for a year through Google’s relaunched student offer. The table below compares the free plan with the cheapest paid tier, Plus at $4.99/month.

Google ties each NotebookLM tier to a Google AI subscription. At I/O 2026 on May 19, Google split AI Ultra into a $99.99 entry plan and a $199.99 high-limit plan, which gave NotebookLM Ultra two distinct SKUs. Google then cut AI Plus from $7.99 to $4.99 in June 2026. On September 2, 2026, it replaced the daily caps on consumer plans with compute-based limits that refresh every five hours, up to a weekly limit. The tables below are built from Google’s Gemini Notebook upgrade help doc and its Gemini Notebook usage limits help doc.

The detail table below shows what still differs by plan. Google no longer publishes per-day counts for consumer plans; instead, Settings > Usage shows how much of your allowance is left, and chat tells you when the limit resets.

*Google still adds a visible watermark if you live in India, South Korea or Vietnam. Until September 2, 2026, Google published daily caps for each plan, for example 50 chats and 3 Audio Overviews a day on the free tier. Those numbers no longer apply to consumer plans.

As a consumer, you cannot buy NotebookLM by itself. The product ships as a benefit of one of the four Google AI plans, of a qualifying Google Workspace plan, or of a Google Cloud Enterprise license. For the full Google AI subscription picture across Gemini, Veo and storage, see our full Google AI subscription tier breakdown.

NotebookLM Standard at $0/month (Free tier)

Yes, NotebookLM has a permanently free tier called Standard. Any Google account holder can use it with no trial period, no credit card and no time limit. Other tools do run real free trials; see our AI free trials master list. The free plan gives you up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, and a Standard usage allowance shared by chats, Audio and Video Overviews, reports and Deep Research. It refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit.

For most students, casual researchers and curious readers, that is enough. A typical literature review with a dozen PDFs fits comfortably inside one notebook, and the allowance covers a normal study session; if you run out, it comes back five hours later. You only outgrow Standard when you start running multiple research projects in parallel, generating Audio Overviews on demand for a podcast workflow, or feeding hundreds of sources into a single brief. If you are building out the rest of that literature workflow, our guide to AI tools for students and researchers covers the discovery and citation tools that pair with it.

If you want a bigger picture of what the free product actually does in 2026, our recap of every new NotebookLM feature in 2026 walks through the 1M-token context window, Deep Research, Cinematic Video Overviews and the model upgrades.

NotebookLM Plus at $4.99/month via Google AI Plus

NotebookLM Plus is the entry paid tier and it ships exclusively through Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month in the US, down from $7.99 after Google cut the price in June 2026. The plan also includes 400 GB of cloud storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, 200 Google Flow credits a month with Gemini Omni Flash, and family sharing with up to five others.

Inside NotebookLM, Plus doubles the free plan: 200 notebooks, 100 sources per notebook, and a usage allowance two times higher than Standard. It also gets new features earlier than the free tier and adds Advanced sharing. Basic sharing is already free: personal accounts can give Viewer or Editor access to up to 50 people.

Plus is the cheapest tier that removes those frictions. Take it if you regularly run out of the free allowance before it refreshes, run more than one active research project, or need more than 50 sources in a notebook. At under $5 a month, it is also the lowest-friction upgrade path Google offers across its AI portfolio.

NotebookLM Pro at $19.99/month via Google AI Pro

NotebookLM Pro is the tier most paid power users actually want. It ships inside Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month. The plan also includes Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app with a 1M-token context window, 5 TB of cloud storage, 1,000 Google Flow credits a month with Gemini Omni Flash, $10 of monthly Google Cloud credits, YouTube Premium Lite, and the Google Home Premium Standard plan at no extra cost.

For NotebookLM specifically, Pro raises the ceiling to 500 notebooks, 300 sources per notebook, and a usage allowance four times higher than Standard. It is also the first tier that removes watermarks from generated outputs. Pro is the first tier built for running Deep Research and Video Overviews every day rather than rationing them. Google’s subscriptions page still advertises “5x more Audio Overviews” for AI Pro, but its usage-limits help doc says four times, so we use four.

NotebookLM upgraded to Gemini 3 in December 2025. On June 8, 2026, Google said it was upgrading NotebookLM to run on Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity, starting on the web with Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Expanded Access. Google has not named a newer model for Notebook since, not even after Gemini 4 Argon reached AI Pro and Ultra on October 13, 2026. Its own documentation only promises “access to Gemini models”, so what the free Standard tier runs at any moment is not published.

NotebookLM Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99/month via Google AI Ultra

NotebookLM Ultra is the highest-cap tier and at I/O 2026 it split into two SKUs inside Google AI Ultra. The entry Ultra plan runs $99.99 per month with 20 TB of cloud storage and 5x higher usage limits than AI Pro across the Gemini app and Google Antigravity. The top tier runs $199.99 per month with 20x higher limits and includes Project Genie, which the $99.99 plan does not. Google’s always-on agent, launched as Gemini Spark and since renamed Tasks, is not an Ultra exclusive: it ships on Google AI Pro at $19.99/month and on both Ultra tiers, though it stays unavailable in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and Nigeria. Google labels the NotebookLM benefit on the higher subscription its 30TB Plan, distinct from the entry tier’s 20TB Plan.

For NotebookLM itself, the 20TB Ultra plan delivers 500 sources per notebook and a usage allowance five times that of Pro. The 30TB Ultra plan pushes that to 600 sources per notebook and twenty times the Pro allowance. Both include Cinematic Video Overviews, which Google opened to AI Pro and Ultra in March 2026, and both remove watermarks, as Pro does. Google no longer publishes a separate Cinematic count for any consumer plan.

Outside NotebookLM, both Ultra tiers include the highest access to Gemini 4 Argon, YouTube Premium, and higher rate limits for the agent model in Google Antigravity. The $199.99 plan layers on Project Genie, and the Tasks agent reaches every paid tier from AI Pro upward. If you generate AI media at volume and keep hitting Pro’s limits, the 20TB plan is the entry point. The 30TB plan exists for the power users who would have paid the old $249.99 fee anyway.

NotebookLM via Google Workspace (Business Standard at $14/user/month)

NotebookLM is also bundled into qualifying Google Workspace plans, which is the cleanest path for small teams that already pay for Workspace. NotebookLM Plus became a Workspace core service in February 2025. Today Business Standard ($14/user/month), Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus get what Google calls Higher Level Access: 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook. Workspace accounts are still on daily quotas, at 500 chats, 20 Audio Overviews, 20 Video Overviews, 100 reports and 20 Deep Research reports a day.

The Workspace path comes with two real advantages over individual Google AI subscriptions. First, your data is covered by Workspace’s enterprise-grade data protection terms, so prompts and uploads are not used to train Google models. Second, sharing notebooks across your domain works without anyone juggling personal Google accounts. The trade-off is that the per-seat math only beats the consumer plan once you have several active users on the same Workspace.

NotebookLM Enterprise at $9/license/month

For larger organizations, NotebookLM Enterprise is sold separately through Google Cloud. Pricing is $9 per license per month after a free trial, with a 15-license minimum. It adds enterprise security controls like VPC Service Controls and IAM access management on top of the standard NotebookLM feature set. Workspace admins now get audit logs for Gemini Notebook too, so audit logging alone is no longer a reason to move to Enterprise.

Enterprise also adds shared organizational notebooks, custom expert guides, and the ability to tune notebook responses for tone and length. For most teams under 50 people, the Workspace bundle is the easier, cheaper option.

NotebookLM student pricing: the free year is back

Google has run a student discount before. In February 2025 it offered US students 18 and older the AI Premium plan, which then carried NotebookLM Plus, at $9.99/month for 12 months. What it offers now, since August 19, 2026, is a free year of the subscription NotebookLM rides on. Eligible US college students get 12 months of Google AI Pro at no charge, a plan that otherwise costs $19.99/month, and that carries NotebookLM Pro: 500 notebooks, 300 sources per notebook and four times the free usage allowance. Students in more than 140 other markets get 12 months of Google AI Plus instead, which carries NotebookLM Plus at 200 notebooks and 100 sources. Both windows close on December 31, 2026, and Google’s terms warn that students may see different usage limits than paying members.

Two details most write-ups get wrong. The $9.99/month student rate quoted on plenty of sites is the February 2025 discount, not today’s offer, which is a free year of a full plan. And verification runs through SheerID, per Google’s offer terms, a third-party student verification service, not just a school email address. Google’s offer terms set the age floor at 18+ for the US and the international offer alike. Google also sells students a Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle at up to 70% off.

So the move for a student is to claim the year rather than settle for Standard. Google states that students whose 2025 AI Pro trial already expired qualify again, so burning the first free year does not lock you out of this one. A payment method is required at sign-up, the plan auto-charges $19.99/month once the 12 months run out, and eligibility has to be re-verified every year. Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia are excluded, and if you are not eligible the free Standard tier still needs no verification, no .edu address and no card. Our guide to Google AI Pro for students walks through the claim step by step, and our roundup of the top student-friendly AI tools covers what else is worth pairing with NotebookLM.

Which NotebookLM Plan Should You Pick?

The right tier comes down to how often you run out of the free allowance before it refreshes. If you only spin up NotebookLM for the occasional project, Standard is enough and most readers will never need to upgrade. The 50-source-per-notebook limit fits a typical syllabus or a normal research brief, and the Standard allowance covers a long working session before you feel the limit.

Google AI Pro at $19.99/month is the sweet spot if you live inside NotebookLM weekly, generate Audio or Video Overviews on a content schedule, or want Deep Research running daily rather than a few times a month. It includes NotebookLM Pro with four times the free allowance, watermark-free outputs, and Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app. Google AI Plus at $4.99/month only makes sense if you need twice the free allowance and more notebooks but not Pro’s higher Gemini access. Google AI Ultra at $99.99/month is a realistic step-up for heavy users who keep hitting Pro’s limits, with five times the Pro allowance, without committing to the $199.99 30TB tier. The $199.99 Ultra plan is overkill unless you need twenty times the Pro allowance or 600 sources per notebook. The Tasks agent, formerly Gemini Spark, is no longer a reason to pick Ultra, because AI Pro at $19.99/month includes it.

NotebookLM Pricing vs ChatGPT, Claude and Other AI Subscriptions

For roughly the same price, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro ($20/month each, or $17/month for Claude Pro billed annually) give you a general-purpose chatbot with web search and coding tools. NotebookLM Pro is narrower. It is laser-focused on grounding answers in the documents and sources you upload, which is exactly what you want for academic, legal and research workflows but is overkill for casual chat. Our NotebookLM vs ChatGPT comparison goes past price to source limits, citations and study tools. At the $99.99 entry Ultra tier, NotebookLM sits in the same price band as ChatGPT Pro, which now comes in $100, $200 and $500 tiers, and Claude Max, from $100. The choice becomes “do you want grounded research workflows or general-purpose reasoning at the top end.” Meeting and lecture capture is a third category again, and our comparison of the best AI note takers covers those tools.

One Subscription Instead of Three

Most active AI users end up paying for two or three of these tools at once, which is how a “$20 a month AI bill” quietly turns into $60 or more. One subscription can cover the chat side: Fello AI puts GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek in one app on Mac, iPhone and iPad, from $11.99 a month in most countries (prices checked October 2026). You still want NotebookLM for grounded research on your own files, but Fello AI can take the chat, writing and brainstorming work, and it can turn your notes or PDFs into a spoken podcast, much like an Audio Overview. For the full cross-vendor comparison, see our AI pricing comparison guide.

Conclusion

For 2026, the NotebookLM pricing math is simple. Start free on the Standard tier. Jump to Google AI Pro at $19.99/month when you keep running out of the free allowance before it refreshes or want watermark-free outputs. Step up to the $99.99/month Ultra 20TB plan for five times Pro’s allowance. Reach for the $199.99/month Ultra 30TB plan only if you need twenty times Pro’s allowance or 600 sources per notebook. Workspace teams get Pro-level access from Business Standard upward, and Enterprise customers buy through Google Cloud at $9 per license. The cheapest meaningful upgrade is the $4.99/month AI Plus tier, but most paying users will land on Pro.

If you are a student, do not default to the free Standard tier. Google relaunched its free student year on August 19, 2026, so a US college student gets NotebookLM Pro free for 12 months and a student in 140+ other markets gets NotebookLM Plus free, both on a December 31, 2026 redemption deadline. You must be 18 or older and verify through SheerID. Standard is the fallback if you are not eligible.

FAQ

Is NotebookLM free to use?

Yes. NotebookLM Standard is free for any Google account holder with no trial and no time limit. You get 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook. Chats and Studio outputs share one compute-based usage allowance that refreshes every five hours, up to a weekly limit; Google no longer publishes a fixed daily count.

Is Gemini Notebook the same as NotebookLM?

Yes. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026. The prices did not change with the rename. The usage limits changed later, on September 2, 2026, when the daily caps gave way to limits that refresh every five hours.

How much does NotebookLM Plus cost per month?

NotebookLM Plus costs $4.99/month in the US, bundled inside Google AI Plus, after Google cut the price from $7.99 in June 2026. It cannot be bought on its own. The same plan includes 400 GB of cloud storage, 200 Google Flow credits a month and family sharing with up to five others.

What is the difference between NotebookLM Pro and Ultra?

Pro ($19.99/month via Google AI Pro) gives you 500 notebooks, 300 sources each, four times the free usage allowance and watermark-free outputs. Ultra comes in two tiers: the $99.99 20TB plan raises that to 500 sources and five times the Pro allowance, and the $199.99 30TB plan goes to 600 sources and twenty times the Pro allowance.

What is the difference between the $99.99 and $199.99 AI Ultra plans?

The $99.99 plan ships with 20 TB of storage and 5x higher limits than AI Pro. The $199.99 plan gives 20x higher limits and includes Project Genie, which the $99.99 plan does not. In NotebookLM, the 30TB plan gets 600 sources per notebook against 500. The Tasks agent, formerly Gemini Spark, is on both, and on AI Pro at $19.99/month as well.

Is there a student discount for NotebookLM?

Yes, in two forms. Since August 19, 2026, eligible US college students get 12 months of Google AI Pro free, which is NotebookLM Pro, and students in 140+ other markets get 12 months of Google AI Plus, which is NotebookLM Plus. Redeem by December 31, 2026, verify through SheerID, and expect the plan to auto-renew at full price. Google also sells students a Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle at up to 70% off. The $9.99/month student rate you see quoted was a February 2025 offer for US students.

Is NotebookLM included in Google Workspace?

Yes. Business Standard ($14/user/month), Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus include Gemini Notebook with Pro-level access: 500 notebooks, 300 sources and daily quotas such as 500 chats and 20 Audio Overviews a day. Larger organizations can buy NotebookLM Enterprise through Google Cloud at $9 per license per month with a 15-license minimum.
